Mrs. Bullock, of Elmi-a, N. Y., 1 representing the W. C. T. U., deliv- : ?red two lectures at the Methodist J church last week. She organized a local union with something like a J anran momhort. I UW?V II IUVW Mr. R. A. Murphy, of the county ' board of control, was in our town i Thursday. We understand that the object of his visit was to have the , liquor intended for the Lake City ' and Scranton dispensaries shipped to the Kingstree dispensary. We had an abundance of fire Sunday night. It seems that some one < saw the glare of burning woods he- , low town, or the light from a chim- 4 ney, and went through the streets < eiylngflre. The bell was sounded , and the inhabitants rushed out and ' hunted the tire that could aot be found. ( We understand that we are to gain a new citixen and at Kings- ' tree's cost Dr. Johnson is about ] to make his home among us for the nrAotiee of his profession. We shall extend to him n hearty welcome < and shall hope him an abundant *1. success, we believe that he will 1 find that there is room here for an- < othflt physician. He has secured , the building lately occupied by the hardware store of Mr. E. K. Rod- ] gers and will put a sto< -c ol' drugs , in it. l>r. Johnson is well known as a first class man and a gentle* < man, and from all we have heard , of him he is a eood doctor with a promising future. Again, we say ' welcome! I KlNUSTREE TELEPHONE CO. Duulop did not fill his appointment in the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon. It was a distinct disappointment to many that Bishop Capers could not preach here last Mo.slay night. Inability to make connection from Society Hill time enough for the evening service was the r?ason for the disappointment. There were fine congregations at the Methodist church Sunday, both morMing and evening. The 2nd quarterly conference will be held in the Methodist shurch Saturday and Sunday, the 27<h and 28th inst. The W. C. T. U., of Kingstree, will meet every Friday evening it half-past eight oclock. All members and those who wish to loin are cordially invited. During the month of March the meetings will be held at Oapt. W. H. Kennedy's. Senator Tillman's Solution of the Liquor Problem. in his interesting defence of the souin uaronna dispensary system, Senator Tillman thus sums up the :ase in Frauk Leslie's Popular Monthly for January as follows: What i? there about this method j( selling liquor which makes it superior to prohibition or to the license system? First: Liquor is the only article >i commerce in general use that is consumed at the time and place at its purchase. It is safe to say [hat three-fourths of it is thus disposed of. The dispensary law jnforces a different method by requiring the purchaser to take it away as he would a package of shoes or a sack of (lour. He must go somewhere else than ta the place where he buys it to consume it. Second: The element of personal profit which lies at the root of the saloon evil is destroyed. The dispensers receive fixed salaries proportionate to the amount of workthevdo.?They don't get a commission on sales and have no incentive to push them. Third: "Treating" is destroyed, sod this does more tor sobriety than possibly any other feature of the system. The man who has bought a bottle at the dispensary may treat one or a half dozen of his friends, to one drink and thai till Ua all Tko inrlupomAnf nnfl Will VO ail? i IIV IMUMVVtMVM. obligation to reciprncato which ire so well understood do not exist. Fourth:At sanset the dispensary closes. It opens at eight o'clock in the morning. The legitimate demand lor whiskey is supplied daring daylight, and the dispenser having closed up his place of business, has no incentive to reopen it to make a sale. Under no lorm of license is this possible. Besides it is a misdemeanor to make sales in any way or at any time exeept as the law provides. Letter to Dr. A. M. SNIDER. Kingstree, S. C.
