MARCH 8. 1002. .THE SAGE OF POSSUM FORK Discusses the "Endless Chain"Scheme and Geometrical Progression. I Editor County Record: I - After so many exposures showing the wiles of the so-called endi * less chain business one would I think people ought te begin te f. Mook before they leap." ilut i still they come. Nor are they confined te the unwary or illiterate. Many of our oest people seem so with arhfo*ieg to ret lillMVUawv! ? 0 something tor nothing, or to get something and induce others to ' pay the hill, that they will hold Tea a strenuous argument that it it is honest and right. Very few perhaps stop to think of the great v magnitude, the stupendous re; yult#, iloarri ed far enough. [ * 1 Me 4he "cherry tree" swindler earns 4tp thai the promoters hare messed 1300,000, and they want to gi?e it back to be let off. It is still tresb in the memory el all how the young lady (1 for^ get her name) was flooded with jseney tetters tor the sick soldiers in the hospitals of Cuba. How | she started a faur fold chain by writing a few letters to some of } her friends asking them to send | her 10 cents each, and lor eaca one to write te four of their friebda and request each to send 10 cents L.. te the same lady and also to write to four others to do the same, and oon, widening the chain fourfold. > And hew she could not handle the thousands and thousands ol money letters and care for the mouey that ponred in. and had to % advertise in the newspapers that k she bad enough and more than the I hospitals could use and to stop, afiM aending money! Haw, of course, everybody comi\. mends this youug lady ter her zeal in supplying the wants of the . ; sick soldiers by this endless chain. ?v But there are several private i[ schemes alive new in the land. & One four-fold chain is to solicit ! ?..( * Jrranlc In B " nil An ADP ftftlljr 1V,' 1UUI H^VIIVU W*. ; each and pay for your goods. Then bjj each of those lo secure four other ; agents to seud ou a dollar a piece to pay tor the goods of this second set ot agents and so on; the fourth (set pays lor the goods of the third set and so on. Now let us suppose ? thai it will take on an average one [ ' mouth tor each set of agenls to . j obtain their required four new (J agents, and let us suppose the i> start to he im.de with only ten K] agents ai first, and if successful the next set will be four linns ; that, or 40, the next 160, the next if 640, the next 2560, then 10,240, ^ and so on. In twelve months ut It the same rate it would be a uum t?ar U?i crrput Ad nvprv Dt>r. jjjj Hon in the United States and it. M two months more it would a greatH er number ' in the entire popu lalion of he w oie world. U But, ki. Ed or, ail know the thing-would collapse Jong betoie L it reached that point. But I am i told it is honest and right! It so, O I want to ask where the last set f> ot agents are to find any one to A pay for their goods. But the w ' oaers are not ceofined to the last V set for many, tery many, all aleng w ? the line fail to indooa the stemaary foor new agents to pay for their goods, so thav get nothing unless they pay again?this time far themselves. It is said that in life insurance nine out of every ten let their policies lapse and lose all they have paid, which is of course all elear gain to the companies. Just so these endless chains get all the lapse money, and 1 suppose it mounts In mnro ikitn 90 nnr rent. I If you will indulge me a moment longer I will tell you a little about a two-told geometrical progression, but I know you can't believe the ultimate truth if carried very far. Oae man says to his neighbor, "1 wait you to work for me twelve months and i will sell you some land. I will allow you one grain of sand for the first day's work, two grains next day, four next, eight next day, and so /.r. ^nnklinff it ftVAfT HdV Of VlJj UUU aw W? VCJ -mm*J m course we will not calculate the grains, but will calculate the solid contents ea the basis of one million grains of sand to every cubic inch and it will be easy to calculate. But you must pay for the land down to the centre ot the earth, 4,000 miles deep/' But the neighbor refused to work for any such nonsense, as he callod it. Let us look for a msmeo(, however, and see where it will go te. Say one grain, 2 grain!1, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.,doubling it lor every day. A year is too great to talk about, and we will stop at 120 days, calculate and try ?t and you will find that it will take a pile of sand as big as one thousand worlds as large as ours to pay the debt. So mueh for the series, even a two fold series. A four-fold series, if carried far enough, is a million times more astonishing. I said some of our best people are into this agent soliciting business, men and women. Now, 1 can refuse a man at once; but Mr. Editor, you know if one of the best, finest and' prettiest women asks yon, with a sweet smile, to contribute only a dollar to help her o'lt and try your hand at an agency you just can't say no. But it it is right and honest let's hare the preacher give it out in the pulpit and all hands pitch in aud be agents from Kingstree to "Possum Fork." Exposition Visitors, Quite a namber of sight-seers trom town and county visited the Charleston exposition during the past week. While it is almost a matter of impossibility to obtain the names of all who go to the exposition from this point, we try to keep up with them as nearly as possible.
