FEBRUARY 20. 1902. Through the courtesy of I he secwj r-etary, Mr. 0 C. LingsJton, we hare received a copy of the proceedings or the 27th annual convention of the State Press Association, held at Glenn Springs, S. C., July 2-5,1901. It would b? difficult to find a more clever and iotellectnal body of men and women than the Press Association ol South Carolina, and the papers read at their ajinuaf meetings are highly interesting and instructive. Flowers at the Exposition, I- 4 t * While portions of our country still tremble in the icy chills of snow and ice, thi&lavored land is 1- tf L ? putting on Der. spring garo. mucu attention has been paid by the management to the'beautification - of the exposition grounds with fti flowers and shrubs. Already the I pansiesare blooming, the roses 9 have a new green dress, the rhodJf odendronS" are budding, and the open snace between the flower bed L- and about the whole great grounds K are covered with green grass and grain. The center of the racecourse ?val is a thing of beauty, with its rich coating, of waving oats?a goodly sight for eyes wearied with -the hare grounds and icy fields of more northern latitudes. The live oaks are evergreen, like the palms and palmettoes, and the tout ensemble is that of April, not Feb wary. Mortuary. Mrs. Mary Leonora Graham, wife of Sheriff George J. Grahatn, ot Cooper postof5cevdiedlast Sat-: urday morning and was laid to' rest at Indiantown church on the' afternoon following, Mrs. Graham! had-been in poor health for some tune, but her death was entirely! uif ^?ected. It would be hard indeed to find ; 11.. I a woman more universau.v uciuvcu | than Mrs. "Lipnie*' Graham, as she was familiarly known. Possessed of an innate refinement and an amiable disposition, added to lier unselfish, Christian character, she endeared herself to everyone and her death is a distinct loss both to the community in which she resided and to IndianiWn church, of which sh^ was a consistent member, dufir.j: most.of her lite. Besides her husband Mrs. Graham is survived by one brother, Mr. John M. Cooper, of Indian-1 town, antf a targe circle of ollifrj relatives and frieuds who are bereaved by her death.. On Monday morning, Feb. 17; Mr. John A. McGee died at his iiome six miles from, town across Black liver. Mr. McGee came to this county I win Darlington, some years ago* Hp was well advanced in age.and leaves a wife and lour! children, all of the iatter being grc>wu. Justayearago last Friday the incumbent, Mr. J. VV. Coward, teok charge ot' the Kingstree dis pensary. Since then the breakage has been reduced to a minimum ana mere nave ueeu nu luuucnts at all. The building the dispensary occupies is one of the neatest and handsomest in town, and we venture to say thai there is no county dispenser in the State more attentive to his business or who gives better satisfaction generally than Mr. Coward. Under the present management the dispensary has done a good business and the net earnings amount to a tidy little sum. Brief Notes from Biliyille. There are only two citizen? of Billville in jail now'and one in the legislature. It's oar opinion the race problem could be easily solved by more plowing and less preaching. Most of our people have made enough this year to pay all their debts and get full Christmas. Thank heaven for bountiful harvests. We'll soon be able.to shout hallelvja and invite the preacher to dinner. Justice Jinks performed the marriage ceremony for five tvid ows on Wednesday last. We desire to suv to our friends and patrons that we are still carrying on business at the old etaud, where we are belter than ever before prepared to serve them. This will be perhaps the hardest year-that our farmers hare had to contend with since the war, and feeling this ourselves we ara^oiug'to make it a study to try to p)a*e provisions of all kinds in Kingstree for as little money as they possibly can be laid down here tor and sold on a strictly casn oasis: Auy business man knows that Corn, Grits. Bacon, Molasses, Flour and such like g'K>?U are the same as money. And what our people need in Kingstrre is a maD who is able to cope with -the outside business world and bring them to their doors as cheap as they * can get them in any uurket. '1 ft is can only be done with the money, and at the outset we want to tell our customers that it takes money to run this kind of business. It never luu been attempted here before. It is pu-ely experimental, and whether it shall succeed or fail depends upon the support the people shall give it.
