Sculptor's Odd Experience.
Proctor, the sculptor. tells of an encounter
with a truly Dickensian female
during a sojourn in'London. She was
the true "Mrs. Raddle" of Lan: street;
but since Mr. Proctor was in the lubi:
of more or less paying his rent she was
Boh Sawyer's "Mrs. Raddle" in good
htimor.
Mr. Proctor is a late sleep.'". It lud
been his habit to secure the services of
some "trusty" to keep up a racket in the
morning till he was compelled to ge: out
of bed in order to secure peace. The
sculptor got himself into "Chambers"
and it fell to "Mrs. Raddle" to sets tlu.t
he arose in ike morning. She found,
addition to her u-ual fusillade upon the
door:
"Show a leg. sir. show a leg."
He was compelled to get up and tne' t
the peremptory demand. He planted his
foot just without the door: there was a

was closed and Mr. Proctor wei'f
about his toilet.
After a time this female appeared at
the door with the breakfast service. She
stood with the tray in her hands and
made a peculiar squat courtesy before
him, and, dropping her eyes, remarked,
deprecatively:
"Ho! Mr. Proctor. If honly vcr'd a
ad' on a stockin', yc knauw!"
This formula never varied while the
sculptcr occupied the "Chambers."

the council of New Orleans, La., has
reported favorably on the jrassage of
an ordinance which undertakes to
provide 'phones at very low rates. The
ordinance provides that within eighteen
months 20.000 telephones are to
be installed in the city, free of cost,

use of 'phone for a period of five min*
