A INSTRUCTIVE FIRE. South Carolina Town Suffers Heavily ?Sensational Developments. . Columbia, S. C.. Special.?Twentytbree business houses, composing the heart of the town of TimmonsTille, were burned early Wednesday morning. There was an explosion in the tore of Smith and Dennis that aroused the town and then the flames burst out. A keg of powder is supposed to have exploded. There was no apparatus for fighting the fire and wore r-nmrmilcd to witness the destruction of their property without being able to lift a hand to stay the flames. One block of ten stores, including the Bank of Timmonsville, is in the burned district. The loss is conservatively placed at $100,000, with less than one-third insurance. A sensational feature developed late in the evening when W. F. Dennis, of Smith and Dennis, general merchants, was arrested for arson. Smith had left the town when citizens called at his place. Dennis refuses to talk. Becauso of the peculiar manner in which the fire started, suspicion rested on these men and a search of their premises revealed boxes of goods, shoes, etc.. stacked in their houses and barns. These goods were removed from their tnro hofnrp the fire. The sheriff has gone after Smith with a warrant. Both men have borne good reputations. Hghtlng at Samsr. Small skirmishes take place dally. Catabalogan was under fire yesterday. Genera! Smith expects to clear the island of insurgents by Christmas. Postal Estimates. Washington. Told in Paragraphs. Dr. Handley Moule, professor of theology at the University of Cambridge, who succeeds the late Bishop Westcott in the Bishopric of Durham. England, is one of the most distinguished representatives of the evangelical school in the Church of England. He was for some years at the head of Ridley Hail, called after Bishop Ridley, the martyr, and intended to be a centre of evangelical light and influence in the university.
