T W E Severance has leased the l)r
Fulmore place and will occupy it in
a few days, Mrs. Fulmore lives with
* her parents, Mr and Mrs Hutcliffe.
A N SHtcliffe "moved into bis
handsome new house last week.
We believe ihat this is the most ex|>ensive
residence in our town. Mr.
Bruuson, the contractor, returned
to Charleston last week after turning
the job over to the owner.
W II Wells, Esq., of the Florence
bar, spent Monday in town en business
in Magistrate Gaskins' court.
It was a civil case in which Mr.
Wells was himself the plaintiff. He
*i?(Mired iudrment by default, the
claim being such a just one that the
defendant undertook to put up no
defence.
Martin Severance, is bow the
night telegraph operator at Bumter.
This certainly speaks well fer
youug Severance. He Is barely 17
years of age, and has hud no better
opportunities than hosts of other
hoys, many of whom have not attained
to anything whatsoever,
while Martin has climbed to this
important and responsible position.
We congratulate him and feel
proud of him.
These days the magistrate is occupied
more with civil than with
criminal business. Two criminal
cases were called in the last session,
which was held on Friday. A verdict
?f not guilty was promptly
rendered in one case, while the verdict
in the other was withheld for a
few days for consideration. Cases
of enforcement of agricultural Hens
and the like are of almost daily occurrence.
The short crops are, no
doubt, largely responsible for these
cases.
A party of ten men of our community
purchased from G. M. Timiu
?ns the privilege of letting off the
w.iter from his mill pond iu Florence
county and taking therefrom
all I ho lisri they might be able. The
party we>-1 over Monday night to
open the gates to allow the water
t-> ren off. And as soon as it is low
enough they will go in with not*,
brush, iron* and other things and
wilt no doubt secure a quantity of

The successful formation of the
Lake t iry, Cades and Kingstr* e
telephone line is the most important
bit of businetB news that we
have to note. We are informed by
a member of the company that all
of the stock hu* been paid in, the
line surveyed and the poies being
put in place. There will bo one
phone in Lake City, two in Cades
tinci one in Kingstree. All of the!
block is owned in Lake City and
ade>. This enterprise will l>e
found of great benefit to all that
section.
We should feel proud of our tobacco
market, and those whom
credit for its success is due should
be congratulated and should be assured
of our appreciation of their
efforts. This has been a very bad
year on all or nearly all crops. The
tobacco crop was very short all over
the country, and the little that was
made was of an inferior grade and
extremely light,?it requiring, as a
man expressed it a thousand
pound* to weigh three hundred.
Notwithstanding this short crop
our market not only held its own iu
the number of pounds ami in the
price paid but actually surpassed
tast year's rec.' rd in ln>th respects
eare informed on good authority
that this is the ouly market in this
entire section of the stHte that does
not show a falling off from last
year. At some of these markets
the falling off has been twenty per
cent. On the other hand there hus
been a gain at Lake City. 80 far
there has been sold about forty per
cent more than was sold during the
entire iast season, und by the time
this season closes the gain will, in
all probability, reach fifty per cent
more than last your. This no idle
boast but the old fact, however unpalatable
it may be to some of our
neighboring market*, particularly

honest dealings.
With regard to the matter of a
dispensary at Lake City. We stat- j
ed last week that the managers an-|
nounced that the election of the Il'th I
instant resulted in a tie, each side
receivingthe same number of votes.
We neglected to state that two
blank ballots were voted. There
were sixty two ballots cast, thirty
containing "Yes," and thirty containinc
"No," and two blank. The
town council held a meeting on the
17th tactnvaro the returns and de?
clare the result. A report was
made to the county board of control
n Monday. The following extract
from that report gives the action of
the council on the matter: A petition
praying that an election be
heid on said question and signed by
more than one fourth of the qualified
electors of said town, having
been filed with the town council,
said council ordered an election to
be heid on October 12, 1901, on
said questiou, those in favor of the
establishment of a dispensary to
vote ye? and those opposed, to vote
no. Said election was accordingly
held on said Oct. 12th, 1901. The
managers declared that of the votes
cast thirty were yes, and thirty no,
and two were blank, making a total
of sixty two votes cast, and so
returned in their certificate. At a
meeting ef the council held on October
17th, 1&01, the return of the
managers was found to be correct,
and on a canvass of the ballots cast
it was found and declared that of
the votes cast thirty were yes and
thirty ne and two were blank, containing
neither yes nor no. Some
affidavits were submitted to council
stating facts which it was claimed
showed that C P Hatfield was a
elector and should have
been permitted to vote but was denied
privilege, so it was alleged,
and that W W Cook, who was permitted
to vote, was not a qualified
elector. After discusing said uifiidavits
the following motion was
made and carried: That inasmuch
as Mr. C P Hatfield, who was entitled
to vote was net allowed to vote,
Mr. W W Cook's vote be not counted.
The affidavit of W W Cook declared
that he had voted no. Then
on motion,the following was declared
to be the result of said election:
In favor of a dispensary,thirty votes.
Opposed to a dispensary, twenty
nine votes. M. M. Rodgera is an applicant
for the position of dispenser
at this place. Of course it is by no 1
means certain that a dispensary

Along with his application he carried
an endorsement signed by
nearly ail of our leading citizens
