Theodore Price, the New York
cotton broker, makes the statement
that the present crop is the
iowe9t average oa record for nineteen
years. In spite of this the
price continues lew beyond all
reason. Seed, too, is disproportionately
low, coaaidering the fact
that cotton seed oil is out of sight
in price. All kinds ot provisions
are advancing daily, so that the
poor farmer is catching it on every
side. Yet if the f erasers can
manage to hold their cotton and
seed h short while longer we believe
they will have the sit nation
well in hand, as prices for their
tirnritiof? ?r? turn tn advance
later on.

old defender won out in one, two,

Sir Thomas Lipton's boat will not
be taken home for seme time yet,

owing to the fact that the crews

HAMPTON FOR GOVERNOR.
In announcing his withdrawal
from the senatorial contest, Col.
Wilio Joies makes the suggestion
that all the candidates for this
position stand aside and leave the
?eld open to Gen. Wade Hampton.
The other candidates are

very day it appeared in the daily
papers. Almost equally promptly
Mr. Latimer, who is in Washington,
gave out an interview declining
to withdraw in tavor of
Gen. Hampton.
This coarse of action on the
part of Johnstone and Latimer is
fot surprising. It is the expected
that happened in both cases. Mr.
Latimer is in politics for what'
there is in it, chiefly the .$5,000 a
>e?r salary and the six year senatorial
terra, while Col. Johnstone,
though doubtless equally ambitious,
is willing to deter to Gen 1

General Hampton is now a Tenaged
man, having lived far beyond
the three score years and ten al
lotted to humanity. Ou this Mr.
Latimer bases his objection to
dragging the grand old hero back
into politics. Mr. Latimer's solicitude
is touching, Yet there
are thousands eqally solicitous of
General Hampton's welfare who
disagree with Mr. Latimer. What
could be a more fitting and graceful '
(tribute to the chief figure in South
Caroliua history to-day, as soldier, 1
statesman, patriot and hero, than 1
that the closing years of* his carear
should be irradiated by a
token of the confidence and 1
lore of bis people? It is claimed I
the factional lines are obliterated.
Now is the time to put it to the ,
test. South Carolina will never
have another opportunity to honor
her bravest son.
