rrr-. ^ . I 11 HIT KPRIKN. In charge of W. L. BASS, Esq. V Miss Ltutie Gasque is visitiag her sister, Mrs J M Stargeon. j A good deal of cotton is beginning to come into this market. Dr A F Williams spent a day or + itfiA u-D*k In i :h*rlfaton on business. l? P James applied lor license to1 buy tobacco Saturday. He it orJfi ually from Virginia. K D Rollins was called to Rome Saturday by a telegram announcing the serious illness of his sister, Mim: Alice Rollins. J F Barron, cotton buyer.of Reek. Hill, is with u* again ana will be. here until the close of the cotton, season. The number of buyers wHI make the bidding very lively. A t last Jdonday's city court /our: or live mourners appeared. ' Under* taker's delight" seem ed to have hod h hand in tbe lively conduct of at least two of the sorrowful ones. The proceeds of tbe collection netted 932 Magistrate -Oaskins grinds on. At last week's session he disposed of four cases. One was settled en payment of an amount to the conn- < ty. In the State vs Lossy Gasklos, pasturing stock in George Cock field's corn and rice fields, the defendant was asked for $20 or 90 days. I The dollars were passed in. State j vs Mose McClam and State vs Loa-1 don Graham, carrying concealed weapons, guilty in both cases, sen-i to nee as to both $25 or 80 days. J Sunt Wheeler now has charge of thej defendants The alleged discovery of oil and' eojl reported in the leading dailies was without any foundation ether J than the presence of two cents1; worth of kerosene and a few lumps of coal in an artesian well thatis being dug on A N Sutcllffe's lot] The Idea ef the joke was suggested by a remark Mr. Sutciiffe made about his belief that he weuld strike] oilia his wail. Some young man J who heard the remark conceived the ideaof having a little fun at Mr, Sutcliffe'eexpense. J ust before the noon hour was up, Mr S being away from his lot, one of the young men procured a vial of kerosene and the other picked up it few pebbles of coal from the railroad track. These (theoil and coal) were dumped into one of the barrels from which water is pumped into the well. The pump was then started, sending the wafer, oil and coal down the drill and up the well to the top of the casing, where it flowed out in a greasy stream with an occasional lump of coal. It worked perfectly. Those who have seen artesian wells put down will readily understand the modus operandi. When Mr. Sutciiffe arrived on the scene one of the conspirators, without a suggestion of mirth, was rul>blng the oily s*utf hi the palm of his hand as it flowed from the Well, while the other was calling attention to the (Nad, (he odor of the oil and other utiHrislaknbie evidences of the genuineness of the find. Mr 3 saw, felt, -melled and was conquered. Snatching up a can of the greasy stuff and a pocket of the cost he went dowu street like a clipper before n gale. Almost every one he nn-t went under at the sight and smell of the sample products. Hushing into A H William* A Co's Ku nroSuoud Ika ImnliUa tj% the senior member of the Arm. Dr Williams is a doctor as well as a banker und has a knowledge of chemistry. He applied the tests of absorption and ignition to the oil and promptly went off his feet. Hastily refusing to consider all offers to buy lots in the neighborhood of the well, he swept towards the gusher at a killing pace. By this time pretty nearly the entire town was aroused and moved like an avalanche to Mr. Sutcliffe's lot, the <*onspirators taking refuge io the upper story of the house where they rolled ou the floor in an agonv of mirth. Cans of all kinds wera filled with the liquid, and pieces of coal were caught up while a babel of excited voices began to tell off fortunes ami build a huge city. A muu approaching with a lighted pipe was ordered to keep away. Judge Green's misery was pitiful as with a voice coming from a breaking heart he wailed, ui could get foO/KJO for this lot now, audi practically gave it away " Mr J J Morris, standing near Mam direei, was gouging into his sahnnn can of greasy water, smelling the stuff, tishing up the mud with a stick and applied the fire test while dreams of splendor rolled before his vision. The price of land jumped an hundred fold at a leap. Reporters sent dispatches. Things were In a whirl. Chaos reigned. A merchant remarked that he had sold the kero* *ene! The bubble twst! The vis-; ions floated away, and it is not very healthy to say much about oil to rertain persons.
