A Publishers' Clearing Mouse.
The establishment of a publishers'
Clearing house was discussed at Friday's
session of the Convention of the
National Association o: Newsdealers,
liook Sellers and Stationers, in New
York. A resolution was adopted reciting
that the book publishers had
greatly benefited the trade by adopting
and maintaining standard prices for
books and urging the association to.es-'
tablish in this city a publishers' clearing
house for the convenience of both
local and country dealers. The conventlion
urged the increase of the price ck
the peny morning newspapers on the
ground that it was impossible for the
dpnlprs to make a living out of morn.ng
newspapers, which they have to buy at
0 cents a hundred and sell at a c^nt
each. The publishers of the New York
city morning papers were asked to increase
their ratail price to 2 cents and
V to furnish the papers to dea'.e s at 51.10
a hundred.

OMENS OF BAD LUCK.
rracln; the Origin of Two Once Popular
Super >lltlon?.
Crossing knives at table originally
meant bad lack. The original knife
used at the table was nothing less than
tbe dagger which all men wore in their .
belts, ready either for carving the
muttfrn or for cutting throats. In the
dav^ when private quarrels were always
fought out with dagger or sword
?and that is not eo very long ago?the ,
very beginning of a dispute made the
womenfolk nervous for their husbands,
brothers or sons concerned in the argument.
That crossing of blades was the i
sure sign of a fight, and It's no wc ler ;
the women found crossed knives sug- '
gested misfortune. Spilling the salt
meant once the worst of bad luck. Salt i
was until quite recently very expensive.
a dear necessity, as it is today [
among the natives of India. The very ,
phrase "worth his salt" means "worth
his wages." The word salary means
salt-money. Because it was so import- j
ant olden usage placed the salt box in ]
the middle of the table, that all hands j
might be within reach. The family and
the guests sat "above the salt." the
servants "below the salt." and so the
difference of rank was created between
"gentle" and "simple." Such being the
importance of the salt box. the upsetting
of it was something more, than |
an accident. It was an event. But sup- j
pose that the guest of the house, or the j
ambassador from foreign parts, upset j
the salt, it was taken as a sign that
he betrayed the "bread and salt" of
hospitality, turned against the hand '
that fed him, and was only in this .
house as a spy to betray its master, j
The spilling of salt was taken as a
providential warning*)f coming attack/ j
of danger, drawing near the house.
That is why it became a sign of bad ,
