Senator John L. McLaerin has
sent a formal reply to theState Executive
Committee declining to
consider their demand that he
tender his resignation as L'nited
States Senator. He claims that
the twenty-one members of the
committee .have no right to speak

election, and incidentally compares
his record in the senate with
that of Senator B. 11. Tillman,
making some very ugly charges

A DARING BURGLARY.
Mr. A. W. Gagg's Store Plundered
Sunday Night.
Monday morning when the store
ol Messrs. Gagg, Oliver <fc Co., on
Academy Street, was opened for
the day's business, Russell Gagg,
son ol'tlie proprietor and the first
to enter the building, discovered
goods scattered about over the
store in confusion, and on further
investigation found that the store
had been broken into and robbed.
A large pane of glass in the back
door was smashed and it was by
this means that the thief or thieves
gained an entrance. Mr. Gagg has

place, but thinks it probable that ;

during Sunday night. It is impossible

as Mr. (Jagg carries a lanrstock

A Pleasant Entertainment?Crop Conditions
and Personal Notes.
Last Friday night a large crowd
of the youth and beauty of this
vininitv gathered in the trrove at
Mr. George Thomas' house near
Rome, to attend a "swap party.''
At an early hour tho lawn was
alive with the hearty laughter of
tnerry young folks and the hours
sped by as gayly as a mid-sum-;
mer night's dream. Miss Maggie!
Aitman, the hostess, exerted her-'

self most successfully for the en-'
joyment of all, and if any individual
present tailed to spend the
evening pleasantly it was surely
not her fault.
About nine o'clock the "swapping'5
began. This consisted of
exchanging packages containing
unknown articles, and it was most
amusing to see the young men
and maidens making their swaps.
Of course the girls did all the
oheaiing?they are good at that.
When the bell rang as the signal
to stop Whippoorwill was left the

Then came refreshments which
were highly enjoyable. Alter
supper the young folks paired off
and wandered away in solitude to
swap hearts, wo suppose, or at
least to trv to do .-so. Delightful
music, both inlrumental and vocal,
was discoursed, which lent
added charm to the festive scene.j
At last, as all good times must j

ant farewell, carrying with lis!
