ft Was to Roil Himself on the White
House Lawn, and h'e Did it.
"I never go to Washington that I
do net think c: a young Englishman I
who went around the city with me a
dozen years ago." said a man who had
just returned from the inauguration
ceremonies. "We saw everything that
mere was to oe seen, ric was
with everything, and he said so; but
the thing that impressed him most was
the lack of formality and the absence
of guards.
"He never tired talking of this and
comparing the simplicity of the arrangements
in Washington with the
way the rulers of Europe are guarded.
Particularly he was Impressed by the
^ fact that any one who wished to was
allowed to go Into the White Hcuse
grounds, and wander around without
showing any passes or credentials of
any kind.
"Well, one day we were wandering
around and we went up past the White i
House. 'Ihe Englishman stopped and
watched the stream of men and wo- !
tnen going into the grounds.
" 'By Jove.' he said, "it is wonderful, !
and no mistake. Why, they let you
do just ps yen please. Do you knew, j
I think that if a fellow wanted to he
could go in there and roll over on the
lawn and there wouldn't be a person
who would think of speaking to him
about it.' 'Of course no one would
speak to him about it.' 1 said. "What's
more, if you want to do it I'll stav
here and watch you. and if any one
rfnoc s-v anvthlnr about it I'll help you
lick Lira.'
" 'Y.'il! yon ?' h<? raid.
44 'I mean it.' I ra:d.
"He looked r.t rae lor a minute, and
then he walked into the White House
prolines. There was a crowd there, :
but no one paid the least attention
to h'.ai. He wont cut. on the lawn. J
right in front of the main entrance '
to the building', and lay down flat on
his baek. Then he rolled over three
times, slowly and deliberately. Then
he got up and walked out of the
grounds, as happy as though he had
found ?!?.
"No one looked at him, and no one
epoke to him; to roll over on the
White House lawn might have been
the proper thing to do so far as the
attention that it attracted went. The
Englishman said that if he had acted
that way in any o: me capnais on me
other side he would have been locked
up as a dangerous character. He was
very proud of his exploit and I suppose
that he is still telling the story of it
in England."?New York Fun

Lord Kinnnird, now in this country

At the last meeting of the Edinburgh
school board complaint was
made of the partisan character of
some of the touching found in school
books. The Rev. Father Stuart, in
moving that it be remitted to a committee
to arrange a tetter method of
securing books for the schools, remarked
that a number of the books
were an offence to history. Although
not made in Germany they were made
out cf Scotland and one result of the
strong gloss of English authorship
would be found in the fact that Queen
Elizabeth was painted as a saint an 1
Mary Queen of Scots as the greatest
of sinners. The motion was adopted.
