POPULAR SCIENCE.
'Among the insects, while the perfect
etate is generally limited to a few
months, certain of the bees live for a
few years, and the same is probably
true of the ants.
A scientific paper calls attention to
the importance of keeping the ground
on hillsides covered with grass or
with trees. A slanting cultivated field
washes away rapidly, and thus rich
soil that is the very life of agriculture
is carried to the rivers, and theuce
to the ocean, where it is not needed. A
muddy river means, therefore, a real
loss to the people, a loss that might
be avoided. There is no doubt that
many rivers that are now muddy were
clear before civilization carried tillage
to the regions through which they run.
Observations on the Isle of Wight
have shown wonderful results as to
the distance that an earthquake sends
its impulse. The instruments, in September
last, detected tremblings on
five different days, and subsequent investigation
showed that on three of the
days they originated in Alaska: on
the fourth day. in Asia Minor, and on
the fifth day,.in Japan. On two other
days of the same month there was an
earthquake in India, but the Isle of
Wight instruments did not feel the impulse.
because, it is supposed, the
shocks were due to local landslips.
The sea has flowers as the land has,
but the most brilliant of the sea flowers
bloom not upon plants hut upon
animals. The living corals of tropical
seas present a display of floral
- - - - ? 1 -!-.M
beauty which in rienness ami vivmness
of color and variety and grace
of form rivals the splendor of a garden
of flowers. The resemblance to
vegetal blossoms is so complete that
some persons find it difficult to believe
that the brilliant display contains no
element of plant life, but is wholly
animal in its organization. Among
the sea animals which bloom as if
they were plants arc included, besides
corals, the sea anemcue and the sea
cucumber. , . r
Some interesting facts concerning the
comparative number of particles of
dust and bacteria in the air were communicated
to the Hoyal Institution recently
by Dr. Allan Macfadyen. Using
\ itk<>n's dustcounter. lie found in an |
open suburb of Loudon 20,000 dust
particles in every cubic centimeter of
air. while iu the heart of the great
town the number of particles, iu the
same volume of air. was 500,oOo. In
the open air of Loudon there was, on
the average, only one micro-organism
to every 5S.300.000 particles of dust,
and in the air of a room amongst 1S4,000.000
dust particles' only one organism
could be detected. These facts,
Doctor Macfadyen said, illustrate the
poverty of the air in micro-organisms
.even when it is very dusty. Their
continued existence is rendered ditncult
through the influence of desiccation
and sunlight. Drying up is one
of nature's favorite methods of getting i
rid of bacteria.
A note by II. llonri Coupin in the
Acadentie des Sciences deals with the i
sensibility of the higher plants to very |
small quantities of toxic substances in 1
a state of extreme dilution, and the remarkable
character of the work lies
in the almost infinitesimal quantity of
?ucb substances needed to cause serious
disturbances in the health of the
plant organism. The most deadly substance
discovered by M. Coupin was
sulphate of copper, of which only
one seveu-hundredth-millionth of its
weight in water was sufficient to react
upon plants disastrously. The fore
?,U4I if-, O JliUUlll.?, j/uioutivuo HO UIV,? tliV
to plants, are altogether too small to
ho detected by chemical analysis; and
the research raises the important question
as to whether or not the character
of the vegetation of a country is
largely influenced by minute quantities
of such substances contained in
the soil.
Fishing: sit Crystal Faiace.
London is establishing at the Crystal
Palace a fishing preserve where any
one who wishes to lish with flics for
jtrmu may linvq that delightful pleas
ure. One- of tiie lakes, wnicii is sever- j
al acres in extent, is being stocked j
vith American rainbow trout. Two
hundred of those have boon taken
from the acquarium in which they
were reared and placed in the waters
of the lake. The water is rather muddy,
and the trout themselves would
not call it fresh if they could tell what
they think about it. If they thrive
^ in the lake the experiment will be considered
a success, though for the first
year angling is allowed the trout will
be taken off the hook immediately tliey
are caught aud replaced in the water.
The iish are not feed artificially, but
are left fo llnd their own food in the 1
lake. The only thing to be feared is
the possibility of an outbreak of gill
fever, caused l>y stirring up the mud
* ' at the bottom in dry wen.her, v hen
the water is low. This would suffocate
the fish.
