lr* charge of W. Ii. 11 ASS, Esq. ? ' "J ' l -JJJL'J ? J >r. A. H. Williams spent Wednen-1 day in Sumter. Mr. S. T. (iodw in went up to Florence Tuesday. Mr. Sam Epstein took a run up to] Florence Wednesday night. Mr. II. 1'. Thomas, of Manning,! was in town Monday. Messrs. J. J. Morris and L. L.! <'aidwell spent Monday in Kings- j tree. W". IT. Wells, Esq., of Florence, was in town last week on profes-i sional business. * j Mr. F. Nachnian camo up from! Fharleston Friday and staid over] until Sunday. Mrs. Sam Epstein left for New j York last Wednesday. She goes on a visit to her parents and will be i away about four weeks. Little Ethel, daughter of Mr.Kenn'e Fitch, fell out of a window some days ago and broke her arm. Dr. DuRant set the arm and attended the little patient. .Sho is recover-j ing nicely. Mr. McGee, an old gentleman, was j thrown from his buggy not long since. He was pretty badly shaken up and received some wounds, among them a large cut on tb.ej head. The wounds were attended ; to by l>r. Durant. ! \Tutters were verv dull in court ! ; circles last week. There were some j cases in the ir.tendant'9 and in the magistrate's courts, hut only one conviction in each court was secur- j ed, and both of those were for min-i or offenses to which pleas of guilty j were entered. Mrs. W. It. Baker and her (laugh ter, .Miss Pauline, came down Tues- i day. These ladies uere gladly wel- i -coined by their friends, of which : . they have manvin this town. Mrs. Baker is the wife of Rev. W. B. Baker, who was pastor of the Method- j , ist church here not many years ago. Miss Pauline has grown to be quite is . a young lady since she left here. The berry men have gone. Be-; - ddes those who spent only a lew ; days, the following put in the sea-! son here, or the greater part of the ! season: Mr. Cuibreth, represent-j ing Cuibreth, Bros., Philadelphia;; Mr. Plummer, representing Henry : 'Elwell ?V Co., New York; Mr. Mixon,' representing J N Yoorhees, New ] York, and Mr. IloIIiway, representing Wilson A Co., Philadelphia, I The number of transients was many,1 We hud a tremendous rain Sun-i day afternoon accompanied by j high winds and terrific thunder, j The roar was continuous and to the timid appalling. The wind was almost a gale, and the rain fell in great - ' sheets. No damage was done except The Mowing down *f a few trees and >? little fencing. Heavy imins fell Monday also. We are iu?f rined that Sunday afternoon's j wind moved Mr. John Moore's! park house off the pillars. Must have been more than brdeze. The berry season is about over. While the quantity of berries is ?e ; great a> it was a week ago the | I rices have fallen so low that they will not pay expenses. This applies to Northern markets especially.! Shipments continue to he made to) rear-by places as Richmond,Lynch-: Ibnrg, Savannah, etc Taken all in ail this has been the most unsatis-j factory season that our growers have known since the establish-j went of the berry industry. Like everything else, it has its ups and downs. Perpetual favor cannot be ] ..............I.If ovnui'tud Tlio Ifovt >ii>. rious blow came tfiis year in the piienoininallv tardy spring. Jti was hard, very hard, to convince j our people that we really had the! tread disease among us, but finally ! lease developed that left no room I ?or doubt. Just so it will be in I "Kingstree. Front all the information we ean gather Supt. Wheeler was not in any way to blame for the occurrence. Mr. Wheeler,as is his ens. tout, went home Saturday afternoon. Mr. Moulds, the guard, also went to his i.oni" leaving his son, a mere Uty twelve (r fourteen years of age, to take care of the camp. It was this hoy who opened the dottr next morning when Melvin -and Mack dashed out. Mr. Wheeler says that the leaving of this boy in charge was in plain di*?egard of <Lis positive instructions, seeing s\ . * almost incredible that one should ; entrust a lot of convicts, and some of them desperate characters, perhaps, to a child. And it is almost: stranger still, that only two escaped.' I Jule Mack has not been recaptured j yet. Mr. Wheeler* however, seems I confident that he will be secured | before long. This would be a mat-: tor of congratulation. FOI OHT FOR Hl.s LIFE. "Mr father and sister both died of . consumption.'* writes .I. T. Weather-, wax, of Wyandotte.
