I HE SITUATION.

As it usually happens in such i
f cases, a great many wild and sensational
rumors have gone forth i
t concerning the prevalence of small I
pox in Kingstree. many of them'
he:ns without foundation, in fact. 1
For example, the writer, who was j!
in lieorgetown ujpti! last K/iday,!,
heard there that there were twen- i
ty-fcye cases o/saiulj-pox in Kings- JI
tree and that the town was under j%

here it was found that the town i
was not under quarantine and ;
never had been. Moreover, ii j;
was rumored that Georgetown wa>!
quarantined against Kiugstreeli
To-day (Tue>day) a person direct j,

there is no quarantine then
against Kingstree. There art-I,

this and equally unreliable. j
JSow we intend to give the fact.- j
in regard to the situation hero a> ,'i
nearly as we can ascertain (hem {
after several days' close inquiry
and investigation. The first ap- ;
pearance of the malady lhat i
aroused suspicion was among the l
pupils o! the graded school, sev-!
eral ol whom showed a slight skii j
eruption. .Several days later th?-1
principal was similarly affected, |i
and it was thought best to close II
the school. i

who promptly appeared on the';
scene and examined the various{
cases, pronouncing several of them j
to be small-pox or varioloid of a
very mild type and recommending
that the patients be isolated. The
local physicians are divided in
opinion, some of ti?em agreeing
with Dr. livans, while others in- j
sist that theso-Cjilied small-pox isi
nothing more than chicken pox.'

in this review of the situation we
hare tried neither to add to nor
take Irom them.

opened on Monday, the dedicatory
speeches being made bv VicePresident
Koosevelt and Senator
Lodge. The presidential party are !
still in the West, where they have
been detained by Mrs. McKinley's
illness. The president expects to
be on hand by June 13, which
will be "President's Day.'' Lieut ]
Richmond P. Ilobson, representing
the navy, is present, but has
not as yet been given a particular

Judge, Buchanan from holding
