of Eastern North Carolina, and no
doubt in the sections of your own
State, the farmers do apply fertilizers
to the cotton crop hi what would be a
lavish way in other sections. About
Laurinbttrg it is a common practice to
use G0<? to SOO pounds of fertilizer petacre.

old upland field would particularly in
a dry season, produce had results in
the cotton crop. In the sections wher*
heavy fertilizing is practiced you will
find that the soil is not only level, but
moist and dark with decayed organic
matter.

able to use commercial fertilizers
more lavishly and profitably these
soils must be farmed differently.

fertilizers, because of the larpc
amount of the moisture-retaininp humus
their soil contains, the upland

It will not do to assume that hecause
certain fertilizer formula has
given o:. client results in Eastern
North and South Carolina that the
same formula, will be the best for the
same crop in the upland country.

of the soil at a Farmers' Institute ;u
an Eastern North Carolina County. I
was struck with the unanimity with
which rhe best farmers present agreed
that they couM get no profitable results
from the use of phosphoric acid
on their soils <n the proportions it is
usually found in commercial fertilizers.
but that nitrogen and potash always
gave good results. We were disposed
to doubt their results, but subsequent
investigations of a perfectly .
accurate nature have shown that this |
is true of their lauds and of all tlie
section where phosphatic rock is
found, and it is evident that for that
section at least the ordinary factorymixed
fertilizers are not correctly proportioned.

crop there they need more nitrogen
and potash than in the tipper country.
In your section wo liud a different
stale of affairs. There, in
order that the host effect may be
had from the application of potash
^ salts, there is needed a liberal proportion
of phosphoric acid, of which your
lands are dvlieient. The application
of phosphate alone will not euro the
evil, nor will the application of potash
alone, but when used together in due
proportion they give the happiest results.

complete mixture with a due percentage
of nittogen. If your soil lacks
phosphorie acid and potash there is :io
way to gei them from ibe air.
But what I was trying to come at
in your case was the fact that no fertilizer
application will give its best results
till you have by good farming
restored the humus which enables the
lowland farmer to he more lavish with
his fertilizers. He may he using things
he iced not buy. and doubtless thou

tliiug. because they fail to experiment
w th their soil and tind out what it
really needs. You and you alone can
dc this, for the analysis of the chemical
laboratory will not do it for you.
It is only by testing ou separate plots
the different forms of plant food and
their combinations that any one can
tind out the particular manurial needs
of his soil. If your soil is sandy and
much of your upland there is sandy,
you may depend upon it that nitrogen
and potash are the main needs of ihe
soil, and that to get the best action of
the potash there must be a due peri
cent age of phosphoric acid. The
I nitrogen you can get by good
farming. the others von must
add in the fertilizer, and the amount

through the cultivation of legumes
and the storing of humus in your soil.
The more you accumulate nitrogen
aud organic matter in your soil the
more liberal you can use the phosphoric
acid and potash aud make it
pay. for while getting the nitrogen
through the legumes, you are at the
same time getting the conditions n
your soil that will enable you to use
more and more of the other forms of
p'-nt food. Feed the legumes with
iiberal doses of phospnate and potash
and your may depend 011 their doing
