of starting a hotbed may he considered j
about $.7 a sash. While this would |
have been sufficient to put up a very 1
Rood run two years uro. it is doubtful <
whether at the present time it could <
be done for that price. It would in- *
elude fence, plank, sash, mats and '
shutters. The sash and shutters should ^
bo well painted. j
The gardener generally sets his hotbeds
in the open field. He first puts
up a laiard fence G or 7 feet high, fae- <
ing the south and slanting back some 5
IS or 'JO inches at the top. The posts '
should be 5 or G Inches through at the f
top and set feet in the ground. We f
hold the boards to the posts by two i
coach screws to each post. These
screws pass through narrow cleats
with a large washer between the cleat t
and the screw-head. The boards are j1
taken down in the summer and used '
to blanch early celery. We mark every
hoard before it is taken down and
then by using each fence by itself
there is very little trouble in putting
it up again. We leave the cleats
screwed to the post and seldom have

farther from the fence than many, an
we wish to have plenty of room to
walk lietween the he<l and the mats
when they are rolled.
We set a line three feet or a littlemore,
from the bottom of the fence,
anil from twelve to fifteen inches
ihove the ground, and if possible, draw
it tight, so as to give the lied as nearly
lit even fall as possible. It is not well
to have the bed exactly level, as the
water does not work off so well, but
we do not like to have it fall too
mu'-h. If this line is drawn tight and
stakes put in often enough to prevent
if from sagging, all that it Is necessary
to do is to set a line of plauk the
length yon wish the lied. I'lauk
twelve inches wide and two inches
thick are none too heavy. These are j
hold in place by stakes about three
feet long and three inches wide, sharpened
and driven two to the plank. Tin
end ones should lie nailed to both
plunks and come to the top of the
!>l;ink to break the joint. It is not so j
particular about the centre ones. Pieces j
of rough boards are all r.ght for these
-.takes. Nine-penny nails are the best
size to use for nailing the stakes to
the plank if the stakes are oue huh
thick, and by nailing through the
stake iuto the plank it does not tear
the plank to pieces much when taken
down, as they are every summer.
Five inches seems to be about the right
amount of fall on a six-foot sash.?II.

An Early Church.
Rerert excavations In Rome have
brought to view the interior of the basilica
of the Virgin, probably the earliest
church dedicated to Mary in the
ancient city. How ancient it cannot
be known, but it was written of as old
in the eighth century, to which date,
when Pope Paul I restored it, the now
inccrvcrtd remains belong for the most
part, though there are on one of the
svalls traces of frescoes which* are asrribed
to the reign of Justinian. In
:he ninth century the church was destroyed,
It is supposed, by an earthjuake,
and abandoned; and its diaconlte
was transferred inn 847 to Sta
daria Nuova, now Sta Francesca, near
he arch of Titus.
The actor was pitying "Monte

ihrieked, and the atitfieaee applanded
vildly. "What geniusk" thought the
tudience, "I wonder if I can borrow
he price of a fried egg sandwich after
he show," thought the actor. There
a no moral to this fable.

Benefit of African Telegraph.
The telegraph from tho Africaa
coast to Lake Victoria Nyanza has
been completed and it will be of great
advantage to the inhabitants of Lower
Egypt. The natives depend on the rise
of the Nile for irrigation, and hitherto
they have only known a very short
time beforehand the condition of the
waters. Now, however, that communication
has been made from the sources
of the Nile, the required information
can be sent several months in advance,
and the Egyptians can regulate
'their supplies.
