SEVEN WERE KILLED Terrible Catastrophe Followed a False Fire Alarm. AUDIENCE COMPOSED OF HEBRFWS The Wildest Excitement and Mad Rush for Safety when a Han Cried Fire. Chicago. Special.?Six people were [ crushed to death and as many more seriously injured in a panic which followed a man's cry of "fire" Saturday afternoon in West Twelfth street. Turner hall. About SCO people were in the place, gathered to witness the performance of a piav entitled "The Green Horn." The lollowing were killed and injured: THE DEAD. George Shaffer, aged ;> years. Twenty-two persons are reported injured. several very seriously. Six persons are missing. MISSING. Samuel Mendelssohn and two children. The'play was in Yiddish and audience. comprising for the most part women and children, were all Hebrews. The hall stands in the center of a district densely populated by Jews. The play was nearly over when the cry which caused the panic was raised and within five seconds after it rang out through the hall ihe entire audience was converted into a frantic mob. every member of which was fighting for the safety which lay beyond the doors of the building. The hall is frequently used for dances and when a theatrical perfomrnce igiven chairs are plced for the spectators. As scon as the wild rtt-h toward the dobrs began, chairs were knocked donwn in every direction, the aisles di-appeared and the excited people ran. climbed and stumbled over the chair? in their way toward the doors. Aioond the upper part of the hall extended a balcony which is open oniv at one end. H< re were seated 150 women and children and the women at the forther end of the bal ony. away from the stairway, see'ng that the rush toward the exit wa* blocked to them and their chililren. began at once to throw the little ones over the railing to the floor ten feet below. The children fell into the inidot cf the maddened throng and were a: ouch trampled under the> feet. It is known that three of the dead were children who were thrown fro*n the bal.ony and were trampled by the crowd, with not a chance for their lives. Following the rhilren many of the women sprang front the balcony upon the crowd be'ow and others, swinging over, hnng by ih ir hand? before they dropped. The railing of the balcony was broken thratgh in half a doztn places by the pressure brought against it by the maddenel crowd. On the main floor the crush was much wor e than in the balcony.
