Theories ate still rile as to the
- ? r i iw>
escape 01 I/.*?CMIC, mi.
negro rapiiL Some people be-,
lieve (bat Ire lias made good his!
escape and is gone beyond Uie,
j>o$sibi!ity of recapture; others
think that, he has already paid tlie
penalty of his crime and is laid
away in come lonely and unl're !
I
'juented spot beside the waters of J
the Black, while there are many
who hold the opinion that the)
- authorities have the negro inJ
custody and that at the proper;
time he will be produced lor trial.!
it is the uncertainty as to which
of these theories is. correct that
bothers .the public and sets them
to guessing, and the most, unsatisfactory
reflection of all is that we
l a. i .
may never oe, irn^ wiser...
It is most extraordinary that
tlie all'iiii has been allowed (o rest
so ouietlv. Inasmuch as . the
sheriff was. at^ing under instructions
irom Governor. Mo&vveeney
when the prisoner escaped, it is
passing strange that the governor
lias not offered a reward for the
negro's recapture or, so far as the
-miKHf ic aware, evinced the slight
est interest in the matter since the
riijrht of the escape. When it is
considered that rewards.are ireely
ojVered in cases ol far less, gravity
to bring the criminal to justice it
is hard to account lor fiiis cause ol
inaction. It is due to the. people
ol this county that the governor
take a hand in the matter, if, as
seems to be the case, the eifortsof
the county authorities are ineffectual.
It there is anything
behind the scenes, lei the truth
come out. The people have the
Jgh t to demand that the resources
ol Williamsburg county and the
State ol" South Carolina be exhausted
before it goes on record
'.hat the,perpetrator of this dastardly
crime be allowed to go
unpunished.
