Tbo terms "monk" and "friar" used :
to denote respectively a smear and a
place which the ink has not touched, I
most probably originated froui the association
cf Carton with the Scriptorium

monk was black, and that of the friar
was white, in printing ofiioos tha term
"latherof the chapel" is applied to the !
chief of tbo compositors.
Loudon is foil of mysteries, but it is J
a surprising thing to tin:' that it is pos- |
sible for a womau to keep 120 dead cats

girings among her neighbors. Vet this j
is what has been discovered at Clerken- j
well. A workman accidentally broke
into tbo family vault of cats, and then
the neighbors remembered that thuir

"Is it better to use white or cream
colored sections or dot'6 it make any
difference which you user" This question,
discussed by the United States j
Beekeepers' union, brought cut the fol- |

plies, mutt of them favorable to white
sections:
Air. Masters?I believe that in my
market I eau soil comb honey in white
eections for 1 cent more per section
than in cream colored sections. I have
tried it time and again. In the cream
colored sections it doesn't sell well.
Mr. Latbrop?I have tried both, acd
1 hud that tho material in the cream
colored sections is very moch poorer
than that in tho white sections. There
is more breakage in tho cream colored.
I do not use tbnw eithtr for myself or j
for my customers. I buy nothing bot
the snow white, and I feel better satisfied.
Mr. Scott?I have soid more or lew
honey with both white and cream colored
sections to tho merchants in Chicago,
Omaha and Kansas City, and I do not
know that there is any uiC'eience. Wo
have made no difference.

Mr. Raochfuss?The past season we

pretty nearly every one of the beekeepers
who bought them because they were

SOIL FERTILITY.
Interesting: Co lie 1m si on* From Experiments
With Fertlliziwn.
Valuable and tbjror.gh experiments
in the maintenance of the fertility of
the toil have been continued for a hv.mber
of years at the Ohio station. The results
of these ex* -ucnts appear to
i- tify the opinion Mat for th? crops
and sails under teat phosphoric arid ia
gt present tiie nioct important constituent
of a firtilizer, with nitrogen and
potash following in the order named.
Further cuncla.-ions drawn by the etai
tiun are:
i The largest increase is only obtaioefl
when tho fertilizer contains all tbrne of
these constituents, but it does not ns
yet seem necessary to use nitrogen and
potash in so largo proportion, relatively
to jiliOfphoric acid, as would be iudicafc;
ed bv the chemical composition of tho
crops.
| Apparently, phosphoric acid should
considerably exceed cither nitrogen or
potafh ia quantity in a fertilizer for
corn, cats or potatoes, while for wheat
the proportion of nitrogen may closely
approximate that of phosphoric acid.
Vitfiio nf is nnnnrAnt.lv tl>? most
effective carrier of nitrogen in common
! use as a fertilizer, but it can seldom be
us"d with economy iu Ohio because of
the telatively high cost of its nitrogen.
Slaughterhouse tanbige, w. teh is (be
carrier of "ammonia" iu practically
all the factory mixed fertilizers sold in
this state, is probably a less effective
carrier of nitrogen than nitrate of soda,
| but the cokt of nit. jg. n iu unmixed
tankage, when due allowance is male
for the phosphoric acid carried by the
tankage, is so much less ti.au in nitrate
of roda that tankage becomes a much
more economical source of nitrogen to
tbo Ohio farmer than nitrate of soda.
This advantage in taukuge disappears,
however, wheu it is purchased iu tbo
ordinary factory raised fertilizer, since
the price at which such fertilizers are
generally sold brings the cost of their
nitrogen to a higher figure tbau its
1 necessary cost in nirrnto of soda, while
the experiments reported in bulletin U3
of this station indicate tuartue nitrogen
of the factory mixed fertilizer is not
more effective tbau that of ordinary
taukage.
Dissolved bouoblack is apparently a
more effectivo carrier of pbosphcricacid
than rrw bouernoal or acid phosphate,
but dissolved bouoblack, like nitrate
of soda, is seldom or never used in the
compounding of factory mixed fertilizers
in Ohio, because of the lower cost
of phosphoric acid in other materials.
Acid phosphate, on account cf its
comparative cheapness ami large supply,
has become the standard carrier of
fertilizer phosphoric acid. Our experiments
indicate that commercial acid
phosphate, like slaughterhouse tankage,
is variable in composition, and both
materials should only be bought on a
guaranteed analysis.
Our experiments fully support the in
ferenco that the phosphoric acid of bonemeal
and tankage, when these materials
nro finely ground, is quite us effecti
ive, pouud for pound, as the "available"
pbosphorio acid of acid phosphate, and
that these materials, unlike boneblack
I and Carolina rock, require no treatment
with sulphuric acid to make their phospborio
acid availuble, provided only tbe
"grinding be done with sufficient thoroughness.
Investigations indicate that
there hns been a decided improvement
in grinding within recent years.
lhisic slag appears to stand next to
dissolved t^ueblack in effectiveness as
a carrier of phosphoric acid. Apparently
this result is in part at least due to
tLe superior mecbuuical condition of the
slag meal, as it is an extremely fine powder.
This material is not treated with
acid.
These experiments show that the fer
tiliziug constituents of buruvurd manure
act more slowly than those of commercial
fertilizers, but as they cost
much less in manure it becomes the
cheapest fertilizer.
The advantage of applying manure to
the snrfaco instead of plowing it under
is strikingly shown.
Wlnfrring Catitine^.
A Colorado farmer gives the following
method for keeping cabbages in
winter: "I plow deep furrows by going
two or three times in a furrow with a
plow turning 14 inches wide. I run a
furrow to every four rows of cabbage,
or to three if the cubbagcs are thick in
tho row. I let cabbages lie four or flvo
hours after pulling, then pack closely in
tho furrows with the Leads down. At
first they are covered with a light layer
of earth by throwing a furrow from each
side. At tho approach of severe weather
I cover with coarse, strawy manure, but
net so thickly as to heat. Those to be
kept till late in spring keep better if
plaood on the shady side of rows of
trees. We kuve very little rain in win
ter, and this plan might not do so we
where rains and snows are heavier.
