WHERE HELP lb NEEDED,
A calamity has fa]j3c.upon one|
of our Southern Stales so griev
o.us that, ihe eyes of the whole
world nre turned towards her with
compassion. Swept by wind and
wave the coast of Texas is devastated,
the city of Galveston being
marked by the elements of destiuetion|as
their particular prey.
No pen picture can convey an
adequate idea of the awful havoc
wrought. The scene baffles description
and staggers belief. Unparalleled
in the history of the
nation is the loss in,a single night
of 12,000 Jives and $20,000,000
worth of property!

the coast of Beaufort were desolated
by the hurricane's bl^ist aid
