The heaviest rainfall we've had
in months came Saturday, and it
came none too soon, it could benefit
no crops except sweet potatoes
andpeae, but it probably marked
the close of the summer and the beginning
of the/all.
The opening sentence of our
.chiefs editorial last week on the
election suggested to us the following
conundrum:?Iu what respect
are defeated candidates like the
.earth??They are flattened at the
polls. (This was also suggested to

The steady stream of tobacco
-till .flow* in. The necessity of
harvesting and marketing the cotton
crop urged on by the high
prices has diverted to some extent!
the excited attention, but the diversion
is only temporary. In a week
or two the cotton will have l>een
-old, and then tobacco will again,1
and with renewed ami refreshed
.energy, secure the entire attention.
There seems to he some reason
for believing that the blind tiger
business in this community is-being
.encouraged bv some ??/' those who
want a dispensary. if tiiis he true
their object in lending their encouragement
is to so thoroughly
disgust the people with tliis illegal
traffic that they will accept a.dispensary
as the lea si of the two evils.
Their hope is that this will be the
outcome.
Cotton ha* Uocn coming in several
weeks at a lively gait, but the
almost phenomenal prices of the
past eight or ten day* caused a regular
tJood. Kveryjthiiyt else has
been ^radically laid aside and .the
energies of the whole people are
being strained to put the cotton crop
on the market at the earliest possible
oate. The gins are run to their
full capacity every day and a geod
part of most nights. If the piesent
move holds on, very little of the!
crop will be left on the farms by tiie!
first of October.
The next meeting of the Bethlehem
Baptist,Union will convene
in the Baptist church of this
town on Friday before the fifth
.Sunday in this month. A large
attendance is expeeted,as there will
be something out 01 the ordinary
an the programme. <>n Sunday
morning, the-'Kith,at 10 o'clock,there
will he a special service in memory
of Mr. J. M. Thomas, who died lust
March. During this.service a numlier
of speeches appropiate to the
occasion will he made and the tablet
erected in the church in memory
of Mr. Thomas will 1* unveiled.
If there Is such a tiling as a polit
jc*al riug at Lake City we have not
made its acquaintance, and the primary
election just closed fails to
demonstrate the existence of any
clique or combination. We think
it cun be easily proved that some
of those who were said to be ring
candidates were Mutually opposed
hy the very men whom rumor puts
at the head of the ring, J t seems
that it would be nearer the truth to
say that all this hue and cry about
rings and clique* was raised for
purely polltical purposes by those
who wished to defeat the candidates
whose homes are in the vieiuityof
I? ike City. Their object Was partly
accomplished, but let thetn be sure
of this: 'Curses, like chickens,
come home to roost."
Last Monday a young man, who
gave his name as J. i?. Chapman
and his home as in Darlington
county about seven miles from
Hartsville, met with a serious accident
at the depot at this place.
The Darlington excursion train,
which was -made up of eleven
coaches packed from bumper to
coupling nub, took the siding to let
78 go by. While on the riding several
passengers got off, and among!
them young Chapman, who walked j
across to the depot. After 78 went by j
the excursion train backed out of'
the siding and went down the main !

gait Mr. Chapman attempted to
hoard it. l>ut lie stumbled and foil,
his body very fortunately striking
outride of the rail. His right foot j
and knee were injured; the top of j
the foot from the instep 10 the toes
was stripped of the skin, the flesh
bruised and the toes injured, the
little one to such an extent that he
may lose it. The knee was badly
cut and the hone possibly fractured,
but no bones were broken. Thej
right side of his face and ear was
cut and bruise l by the ends of the;
ties. The right foot was not injured,
though the heel was torn from
the shoe and the sides crushed.
Dr<. Williams and Hinnant gave
him all the medical attention j>ossible.

wounds, after which he was taken
to Mr. Hampton Benton's.
