FOOD FOR FINGERS.
Fashion Prohibits fte Ise ?f Forks For
Certain Articles.
There have always been certain articles
of food for which the use of
forks, etc., seetned superfluous, and for
which fashion permitted the use of lingers,
even in the most particular dining,
says the Boston Herald. Occasionally
new dishes are added to the list to
which the old-time expression applies
k ?"fingera wore made before forks"?
?rul it is generally understood that, in
apite of the ever-multiplying variety
of forks, tongs and spoons for use
with every conceivable object ou the
table, there are certain edibk* which
it is far better to eut with the fingers.
While a few independent people dare
set aside the fashionable proprieties,
many others will do ns they know they
are expected. As a rule, sugar tongs
are passed with block sugar, but. as a
diner out once said. "I prefer to use
nay fingers, for If you are not just so
careful It drops with a splurge, which
is very humiliating."
Olives should be eaten with the
fingers; any attempt to use a fork is
foolish. When passed they should de
dipped out with the spadelike spoon
accompanying, then dropped on the
bread and butter plate and carried to
the mouth with the thumb and forefinger.
n 1 ??.l olt kinds nt small
nrrau, iimbi auu ?** ~
cakes should bo takon in the fingers,
as well as cheese, though some very
particular people use a fork with the
latter.
At the most fashionable luncheons
high-bred dames may be seen taking
the leg or small pieces of a bird in their
fingers, though this is one of the disputed
points. It will be noticed usually
that those who have always been
accustomed to good society are not so
afraid to use their fingers as those who
fcur to do something improper.
Ben's Bright Idea.

TEACHERS TO MEET. J|_
y
The State Summer School and the
Dducational Convention.
The teachers in the State will soon
oegin to move. The National Educa*
Al CatMP^UV
tlonai Association vpcm> vu. umu.ui., ,
in Charleston. Most of the teachers
will go down on Friday and Saturday,
though many will probably not go till
Monday.
The summer school for teachers
opens at Winthrop College the week
after the N. E. A. so that the\eachers
will be on a strain for about five weeks.
This summer school bids fair to be
even a greater success; than the one
last year. The announcements and application
blanks for admission have
been sent all over the S%ate, the teachers
are everywhere alive and applications
are pouring in to State Superintendent
McMahan and President Johnson
by every mail.
Speaking of the coining State School
Prof. McGee of the office of the State
Superintendent said: "The courses of
study are stronger and more varied
this year than they were last year and
it seems that they will be of even more
practical value to teachers than they
were last. year. The general opinion
among those who were at the school
last year is that the success of last
year can scarcely be improved on.
There are some points, though, which
are perhaps a little stronger. For ln
?! ? 1
stance, tne course in piavmai
geography by Supt. E. L. Hughes will
be something that the teachers actually
need in their school room work
and had no opportunity of taking last
year. This is in addition to the course
in physiography, which this year will
be in charge of Prof. Lewis, of Clemson
College.
"Then there will be this year a course
in practical physics by Prof. Hammel.
Prof. Hammel has been one of the |
strongest attractions at .the North Carolina
summer school for several years.
Supt. McMafian tried last year to get
him but he could not come then, being
already engaged in similar work. He
shows the teachers how to make a
large number of simple devices for illustrating
physical principles. The
course he gives in every particular is
one adapted to the needs of the public
school-. It is net advanced physics but
: elementary physics as Ut? should be
i taught In all our schools. ^There was
nothing of this kind at the school last
year.
"Still another feature o^1 the school
this year which does not'.appear to

course in nature study. Miss Thurfeton ,

of interesting people in the things
around them that there is little doubt
she will arouse enthusiasm in this line.

Chicago Art Institute, who so delighted
everybody that took his course, will be
on hand again. He was such a success
that Supt. McMahan last year engaged
j him on the spot for the work again.
And he is to have five assistants,
Misses Virginia R. Brodie, Fannie L.
Saunders, Emma Graham, Emma
Lucas and Katie Manning. It is likely
that there will be as many as 200 in
the drawing class and those who take
this course may just depend on working,
too.
"These are th" features of the school
which indicate improvement."
