As soon aj all the speaker? arrived ;

to ceder by Dr. S. M. Hyrd. On

Lieut. Co v. IL lk Scarborough,

glorious part borne by. the .South in ;
that great struggle. Told how the
South had put forth her energies
and recovered from the d!sustcrs-of j

caught the crowd with a joke. Said
kg would not discuss the issues of
the campaign in the absence of his
opponents. Had come there to enjoy
the day ami partake of the well-:
known hospitality of the people of
Williamsburg. jb* would not pluck ,
;i jewel from the crown of our famous
generals, but believed that the
grandest j>icture in history was the
Confederate private soldier, it was;
in the .South that the keynote of the
declaration of Independence had!
been sounded. Even in old Williams-j
btirg the Swamp Eox had achieved j
deeds that lived in history; hence it!
is befitting that we should celebrate;
the 4th of July. Col. Livingston
hadmuuy friends in the audience and
gained others, as was shown by the;
applause he received.
Then came the dinner tune, ioj
attempt to describe this would be ai
vain effort. A great rectangular t:t-!
ble appeared with everything to:
tempt the appetite, served in!

To the committee too much
praise cannot be given for their tire-:
less efforts to entertain the vast J
crowd present. Thy crowd numbered!
from 1,000 to 1,500, and everybody
got a good dinner. Free lemonade
was Served and a brass band <1 is-1
