Interesting Exper.ments.
Prof. Masso, of the University of
Genoa, has recently completed a
series of interesting experiments for
the purpose of observing the temperature
of the body during fasting and
the rate of assimilation of carbohyrat?s.
The experiments demonstrated
the efficacy of sugar in raising the
temperature of an animal which had
fallen during a fast Upon the administration
of sugar the temperature
rose rapidly during tifteen minutes
and in one or two hours reached its
maximum. After bread is given the
temperature will rise more slowly
than in the case of sugar, owing to
the greater difficulty the animal has
in assimilating the food. Prof. Masso
savs that with sugar he has succeeded
in retoring the vitality of dogs in a
serious state of hypothermia, while
the administration of albumen to others
failed to save their lives.

35. "Josus went about." This shows that
.Tesus was actively ensealed in the work.
"The gospel of the kins lorn." Ho prol
claimed the good news of His spiritual
j kingdom which He came to set up in the
j hearts of men. Paul savs it consists of
"righteousness, peace and joy in the lloly
Ghost." He told them of a kingdom of
! grace auil glory now to be set up under the
government of a Mediator. "And healing
J every sickness." To His preaching He

in the private houses, aud wherever He

36. "When He saw the multitudes." The
I country was very densely populated at this
j time. This nnd the next two verses are an
I introduction to the account Riven in the
! following chapter. Several reasons led to
Ilis e unraisslouing the twelve apostles and
sending them out to preach. (1) The
growing eagerness of the people to hear
the new gospel. The demand conld not
be satisfied bv one preacher. (2) The
growing opposition of the Pharisees made
Hppnreut the necessity of not only npj
pointing, but of training men to preach
; Christ's gospel. (3) It was because He
I pitied the multitude, who were like
harassed and panting sheep without a
i shepherd, and like a harvest left nnreapt
I for want of laborers. "With compassion.''
j An emphatic word showing how Christ
was moved in Hi.- great love for the people.
I "Because they fainted." Distressed and
j scattered, it. V. This refers to their
j spiritual condition rather than to their
i pnvsical nilments. "As sheep."' No ereaj
tureis more apt to go astray than a sheep,
and having gone astrav none are more
| helpless. Thcv are exposed to hunger,
j cold and ravenous beasts. Sinful souls are
[ as lost sheep. "Havlag no shepherd."
I They had many teachers, but none who
| cared for their souls, and none who were
i able, if they had been williug, to give thorn
such instruction as they needed. Their

their own glory an J gain.
37. "Harvest plenteous laborers few."
There are multitudes to be won for the new
kingdom?multitudes prepared to bear,
for their spirits were broken under personal
and national sorrow; but the number
of right teachers was spaall. ?Geikie. The
Lord of the harvest was being deprived ol
j His harvest for want of laborers to gather
I it in. What an accusation against the
; scribes and priests!
3S. "Pray ye therofore." Successful laborers
nro obtained in answer to prayer.
! When things look discouraging we should
pray more and fear less. "The Lord of the
harvest." The great, divine Teacher. The
one who is able to give a harvest of souls,
i "Send forth." Prepare and call many to
preach the gospel. There is something
greater than preaching and that is to make
preachers. Those whom God sends forth
! succeed, tbo-e who send themselves forth,
1 sooner or later lail. How shall we preach
except we be sent? "Laborers." Jesus
wants laborers; there are only ;a very few
i who really work. A careless, easy-going
i minister will always do actual harm.
1 "Hi* twelve diseinles." Alter spend
| ing the ptecedlng night in prayer, the
; Lord called the disciples together and
j chose twelve, which suggests that He bad
| in mind the twelve patriarchs, heads of
: :he tribes of Israel. They were called together
as disciples, but after receiving nu:hority
they became apostles. "He gave
:hem power." Luke adds, "authority."
Ill rightful authority is derived from Jesus
Christ. All power is given unto Htm, in
leaven and in earth, and He alone can
lispense power. "Against unclean spirts."
"Over unclean spirits." It. V. The
. asting out of unclean spirits is here referred
to ns distinct from healing diseases.
"And to heal." The design of the gospor
was to conquer the devil and euro the
1 world. The power and authority thus
! given them would enable them to command
j the attention and respect of even the scribes
I and Pharisees.
2. "Apostles." The only placo In this
gospel where the word is used. It means,
to send forth. The names of the twelve
apostles were: Simon, Peter, Andrew,
James, John, Philip, Bartholomew (N"athanael),
Thomas (Didymus), Muttnew
(Levi), James the sou of Alpbens (called
also James the Les?, or little, because ho
was small of stature), Jude (Judas. I.ebDeus,
Thaddeus. The brother of James the
Less, aud nuthor of theepistle which bears
hia name), Simon the Cauaanite (called
also Shnon Zelotes, or Simon the Zealot.
Canaanite has no reference to Canaan, but
is derived from the Hebrew kuua, zeal,
aud was applied to Simon because of his
great zeal in preaching the gospel of
Christ), and Judas I?cariot.
5. "Sent forth." They wore sent two by
two (Mark 6:7) in different directions.
They were not to go alone. Each mast
have acompnnion to give counsel and help
to each other iu dltflculties, and to cheer
j each other on the way. They would thus
reaen ainerent classes 01 minus, ?uu ?ccomplish
more real work. Two are more
than twice one. "(Jo not." Do not tako
any road leading to Gentile population.
The time had not come Tor establishing
missions to the Gentiles. A base of operation?must
be secured nmong the Jews.
This limitation was confned to tins mission.
"Enter ye not." Salvation must ilrst
be offered to the Jews, and to have gone to
the Samaritans at this time would have
been a stumbling-block to the Jews.
6. "To the lost sheep." The Jewish
church was the ancient fold of God, but
the sheep had wandered away and were
lost, and unless they were again found
and brought back to God thev would be
lost eternally. "House of Israel." The
Jews, descendants of Israel. He looked
with compassion upon them because they
bad strayed into the paths of siu anil
error, and were in a wandering and dangerous
condition. "The Gentiles also had
been as lost sheep." 1 Pet., 2:25.
7. "Preach." They were to be itinerant
preachers. "Kingdom of heaven is at
| nana. ? e suouia sun iukkc uo mu^uvin
J or heaven the subject of our preaching,
and tell the world that the kingdom has
come. The King Is now here, and salvation
is offered freely to all who will repent.
Matt. 3: 2; 4:17.
8. "Raise the dead." This is wanting in
many manuscripts, and is believed by several
good authorities to bo spurious, although
retained in It. V. The first instance
in which an apostle raised the dead is recorded
in tlie books of Acts. 9:36-42. It
seems very improbable that our Lord imparted
at so early a period this highest of
ail forms of supernatural power. "Freely
give." As you have received miraculous
powers without paying for them, exert
those powers without receiving compensation.
