to be very large, and the indications
are that fruit of all kinds
will be more abundant than for
years. \*o late lrost occurred to
injure the fruit and up to this
time everything has been favorable.
It is sa>i that the blackberry
crop will be immense unless a

The Eclipse.
? !.
The eclipse of the sun, about;
which >o much has been said and!
written lately, came ofl on sclie
dule time last Monday iiiornin.^ ''
and was observed under most j'
auspicious atmospheric condi-|
lions. Not a cloud nor shadow 1
t |
intervened to obscure tlie remark-1
at'Ie spectacle, which, from the''
standpoint of grandeur,- was awe |1
inspiring indeed. Smoked glasses
were the means generally used lo '
observe the phenomena. , The 1
smoked sides were frequently ''
turned next to the face, and many 1
a sooty nose or blackened cheek '
or forehead resulted.
Although not in the track of (
totality, the obscuration at this (
place was almost total for a few 1
seconds, during which time it wasp
very dark and the temperature j *
dropped several degrees. Thep
effect on animal life was "ery 1
noticab!e. Chickens and other r
fowls went to toost, and there was
much crowing; when daylight I
came back. *
The eclipee was a great astro- 1
nomical event and afforded scientists
an exceptional opportunity *
fn mnrh vnhiflhta rliitil for '
future use. Extensive preparations
were made at the most avail- f
able points along the line of total- ity
lor taking observations, and c
hundreds ol scientists viewed the 1
phenomena with great interest. 1

[he time and place, and report *
next Sunday. The other Sunday 1
schools of the town will be invited ^
_ . i

is to be hoped that they will accept,
as their co-operation will
contribute largely to the success
it'the enterprise.

A Creditable Showing.
In report ins the commencement
?.\ rcises ot the Welsh Neck High
school, at Hartsville, the Darling
ton Messenger gives the following
tccouat of the prite drill in which
:adet Asking son ot Maj. ai
Askins, of Lake Oily, figured
prominently:
' At the close r . the morning's '
exercises, eighteen of the cadets |
engaged in a ''prize drill" in the]'
manual of arms. Finally the
number was narrowed down to j
two, and after a very spirited contest
between thece two, Cadet
Burke, of Charleston, and Askins,
of Lake City, Cadet Burke was
declared the winner. In view of
the fact that Cadet Burke was a
Citadel student for two year.8, Ca- ^
det Askins deserves special praise
fur the mauner in which he com
peted for the honor."
The counterfeiter may have
been brought up well, but he
always turns out queer. :

There is comfort In the knowledge so
often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer's SwampRoot,
the great kidaey remedy fulfills every
wish In curing rheumatism, pain In the
back, kidneys, liver, bladder and every part
of the urinary passage. It corrects inability
to hold water and scalding pain in passing
it, or bad effects following use of liquor,
wine or beer, and overcomes that unpleasant
necessity of being compelled to ge often
during the day, and to get up many times
during the night. The mild and the extraordinary
effect of Swamp-Root is soon
realised. ItUcands the highest for its wonil
cures of the most distressing cases.
