Take tini".' before spring work pots well started to cut ami split plenty of wood for the stoves during summer. Well seasoned wood makes pood cooking. and saves waste of time and material in the kitchen. Green wood soon chokes the stovepipe with soot. It is annoying to the cook, whose patience and convenience ought to he considered. especially if she is your wife, and often causes late meals and bad cooking. It causes waste also. It is far cheaper to cut and split wood for the stove now and have it well seasoned by summer time. You will not want to take time to pot up stove wood after the summer work begins. I>o it now, and save thereby. This is one of the ' ways to economize that is often overlooked. A?k Your Dealer for Allen'* Foot-Ea?e. ( A powder to shake into your shoes; rests the j, feet. Two new islands are to bo added to the possessions of the ITiited State;} In tbo "West Indies. They are Hie Mon.i Island and Monito Island in the Moua Passage, between San Domingo and Puerto Uieo. The former is an island of some size but Monito is only a coral reef. It was not definitely known until a few days ago that the Islands be iongcq to ttie i niton Mates an? men not until after considerable research. The Post Office Department lias been having a map made of the American possessions in the West Indies, and was in doubt whether or not to include these islands on the map. An official communication was sent to the .State Department inquiring if the treaty be* tween Vnited States and Spain provided for their acquisition by the ITii. ted States. The treaty was examinee) and allowed that Spain ceded to the I'nited States, Puerto Kico and alj oilier Spanish islands in the West Indies except Cuba. No special nier.< tion was made of Muua Island, and iluirn u-uo tin infnrni:! 1 inti the island to show to whom it belonged. It is nearly six miles long and three and halt" miles wide. It rises about one hundred and seventyfive feet high and is situated just thirty miles west of Mayaguez in Puerto Rico. It is about forty miles from tint coast of San Domingo and lies almost midway of the Menu passage between the two islands. The State Department had no information showing whether or not Mona belonged to Spain, and this was not determine^ until a search was made of several charts in the Navy Department. One chart was found indicating in color* the different colonial possessions of the world, and this showed that Mona was regarded as a Spanish possession and accordingly becomes American property under the Paris treaty. It is Thought probable by naval officials that the island may prove of service to the i niteu Mali's at sonic nine 111 me future, und it is not unlikely that orders will be issued to have it surveyed and charted as an American possession. It is not inhabited. Chronic Tetter. DY. James C.
