heart-rending cry for bread that has
rver escaped human lips or reached
mortal ears comes ironi this famine
stricken conntrv. Since tlie world
began that we have nuv account of
the greatest catastrophe is now being
enacted, and nsleet? help speedily
comes to India's relief fully ten mil.lious
of men, women and children
must die before the next crop is har
vested. Three months ago the government
placed the number of starving
sufferers at thirty millions; today
the number has almost doubled.
Fire millions of these people are employed
by the government at wages

while theremamiug must be relieved
by private-charity or yield to starvation's
edict. Kngland is doing
what she can for their relief, but she
is unequal to the task: aud America,
with her overflowing, butsting grauaeries,
must speedily come to the
rescue or these millions will perish
from the very lack of what we enjoy
in superabundance. May we share
Ju generous measure the abundance
wherewith we have beeu so bountifully
blessed. We are told that our
imissionaries now working in India
have been so affected bv tbe scenes
of heart-rending suffering which they
have been compelled to witness, that

-down with grief at this sad sight,
their tears refuse to flow. They
'themselves hare given all they had
and all they could borrow, and now
they are daily inditing petitions and
sending them broadcast with the fervent
prayer that God will move
the hearts of their more fortunate
brethren in distant lands to contribute
largely in this hour of India's
direst need, and thus help them to
help those who are looking to them
for salvation and impending death.
The cause of Chaist is making won drous
progress among the dense and
'dusky population of India, and now
that ilica9ter has befallen them, and
.death i9 threatening them, what wonder
that they are hoping for help
from this country whence hai! the
missionaries, who have told them
over and over again the beautiful
.story of their Saviour, who w*uit
about doing good. Shall these peo*
.pie look in vain? Will we disappoint
them? Shall we so a:t as t?
make them believe that our religion
is vain and a mere profession? Shall
we shut up the bowels of our compassion
and tell them by our withholding
that American money and
American bread are tor Americans
only that religion is one thing and
(liarity is quite another? Or shall
we open up our hearts, our hand*,
our purses, and in the name of cur
Master, whom wi serve, bid them
share with us the bounties of ourj

vents a day will support a life. One
collar will keep a man, woman or
-child alive two months and save them ;

for God's sake invest in human lives.
