A FIRE IN JAPAN.

Carrying a Lighted Lantern*
At Kyoto, among hundreds of queer
sights wact that of a tire at night, says
a writer in the Baltimore Sun. All
Japs who have friends within a radius
of half a mile must present them- '
selves or their representatives at their
friend's house during or immediately j
I after the fire to inquire if they can be
j of any assistance. The result is that i
| thousands turn out at every fire. The j
! almost deserted streets were quickly ;
j crowded by thousands of Japs, each |
carrying a paper lantern. Ttiev came |
racing down every street and rushing !

lanterns were four feet iong and as big
as a barrel, carried liigb above the j
crowd at the end of a bamboo and fol- j
lowed by a dozen lanterns half so j

i terns, and made visits of condolence to j

through a few lengths of bamboo poles, j

was a sort of pandemonium; the noise

; reived visits of condolence due to the
fire.
In winter there are on the average 1
three fires per day in the large cities.,
resulting in plenty of advertisements
for newspapers and work for carpen-'
tors. Carpenters are often accused of

j pensive. Business firms endeavor to

' druggist, has at last sneereded in accomplishing
this after many ex peri- 1
meats. and now secures gas for lighting
and heating purposes in his store
and residence. The separation of the
| gas is to he accomplished on a larger
! scale, and the streets and residences
are to he lighted and the business
houses all heated at a minimum cost. '
