Cades Cullings.
The new academy is about completed.
Our charming school
' acher, Miss Grace Jordan, of
Dennettsville, will open school in
t he new building Monday morning.
Mr. Dave Nesmith is now a resident
of Cades, being one of the|

a warm welcome.
Mr. Eddie Johnston, recently in
the employ of Nesmith Bros., nas
tone to accept a position in North
Carolina. His sister, Miss Sarah
Johnson, is also in Nor.h Carolina
visiting her sister, Mrs. Gilmore,
much to the regret ot their many
friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Billie Hannah and
family have moved in onr little
town. Me extend thein a warm
reception, and hope others may
follow their example, lor we are
anxious to see Cades flourish.
The Misses Percival, of CharlesIon,
are visiting the family ol Mr.
Henry Johnston.
A lew weeks ago a colored woman
locked her two small chil
drrn in her house and went to a
party. The house caught on fire,
and the children were burned to
?ieath before assistance reached

Your scribe attended the tournament
near Mr. Ed. McCullough's
place on Wednesday, the 10th
inst. Mr. VV. D. Bryan acted
as herald end Messrs. S. E. McCuliough,
A. Blakely and J. L.
Lifrage as judges.
The riding commenced about
Oi.e o'clock and the contest was a
[short one, there being no ties and
no riding over.
The prizes were: 1st* one saddle:
2nd, one bridle; 3rd, a pair
of spurs.

After some horse racing the
crowd withdrew to various neighboring
houses for refreshments,
and an hour or two later gathered
at the residence of Mr. It. J. Morris
to celebrate the marriage of
Mr. Isaiah Morris to Miss Ogbern.
A little later they gathered at
'he residence of Mrs. Brown to
cut the ''pigeon wing."
Upon the whole we had quite a
jolly da}T, but were saddened by
the news that. Mr. Cooper Bovd
had the night before lost his
dwelling house with all its contents
by fire. Them was no insurance
on the property. The fire
was thought tube incendiary.

Attempted Suicide.
At 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon
the wile of a professor in Winthrop
college looked herself in her bedroom
and slashed herself three
times across the wrist Willi a razor.
An hour later her husband
came home from the college and,
going into a room downstairs
where the children were, asked
them if their mother was in the
house. As he spoke he glanced
upwards and saw blood stains
forming and enlarging on the ceiling.
He ran to the room above,
broke open the door and found
his wife bleeding profusely, and
unconscious. On her breast was
pinned a nole stating that she
blamed him for nothing, but that
she was unable to properly raise
her children,and therefore she had
resolved to die.
A physician was summoned immediately
and restoratives applied.
It is thought that the lady
will recover.

miles per hour, enabling the boat
to cross the Atlantic in less than

T. Barker Jones, a white republican
of Charleston, will oppose
the Democratic nominee for Congress

Thomas Jones, a brakeman on
the Southern Railway, lost his
balance while standing on a running
train and full to the ground,
breaking his neck.
RufusSerter, who turned State's
evidence in a whitecapping case
in Union county, was shot and
instantly killed by unknown parties
last Saturday night.
A number of negro employes of
Lloyd's iaundry in Charleston
went on a strike and threatened
to destroy the plant. After some
excitement they were dispersed
by the police.
Dr. E. P. Hammond, the revivalist,
is conducting services in
Charleston, and is meeting with
much success.

Monday.
W. II. Burn, a merchant ot
Bash's, was shot, and mortally,
wounded bv E. 11. Parker on the
14th inst. Parker escaped.
