popular books of the day. It is im- !

of copies purchased. A device, originating
in the St. Louis library, and
I being copied in some other city libraries,
is to put such books on a special
list, and to charge a fee of five cents
a week for them. This satisfies some
patrons, but displeases others, who ;
resent the departure from the free- j
library idea. In practico it helps a 1
little, the revenue aiding in the purchase
of additional copies, while a
few copies are still given out free of
cost. By the scheme the library receives
mere mouey iu fees than it J

Killed While Hunting.
Walter Parks, a young man of the f
Fairvicw section, was accidentally:!
killed while hunting on Thursday. His v
tincle, Commodore Rogers, was hunt- j t
ing with him, when a rabbit jumped :
up just before them, and as Mr. Rogers ! f
fired at the rabbit young Parks rushed j t
in front of the gun and received its ; ^
contents, resulting in almost instant I j
death. Mr. Rogers is one of the best \
citizens in the county, and has the \
sympathy of every one in this deplcra- *
bin accident, far which he is not to ^
biame. The young man was highly es- j
teemed and his death is truly lament- l;

One of the moat amusing facta at the
present moment is a "pig" book, in
which all and sundry of your friends
are asked to draw a pig with their
eyes shut, and sign their names uuder
it. It is far more interesting than an
ordinary autograph book, and causes
endless fun. A pig seems an easy and
mild animal to portray on paper; but
the portraits of him that are drawn
under these circumstances are like
nothing earthly, either in the animal
or vegetable kingdom. Many people

character as well from one of
these drawings as from the baudwriting,
and if you make a study of
