Brother Kirton will leave) in a few days for Greenwood, where the annual Methodist conference convenes next week. Mr W E Severance made quite A'lengthy visit at Lamar, in Darlington county, last week. Willie has no relatives at that place, so it is easy to guess the nature <>1 his business. The Tr&in I)\sp?<ct:cr II.':* TUor? to Do With It Thau tiio Engineer. George LtluTucrt Walsh ccntrib- V]' ntes ail article on "Funning the 111 Fast Express" to St Nicholas. Mr. ,;l Walsh says: rt The eyes of the engineer nro oa the clook aud time table before him, j rud he keeps a sharp lookout ahead. | For various reasons he may fall a [ few minutes behind hand at one ; UUl XIU IIJUXJ tu UiUAg ; tho loss at another. Ho has certain stops to make, and Le makes all speed possible between them. But ho is not master ol tlio road. At j ! any moment a danger signal along : tho line may conirent him. Ho may , be ordered to bring his train to a standstill at a small way station and I there receive telegraph; : orders to j run on a siding. He asks no ques-J I tions, but obeys orders. Five miu! utes later a "special" may rush past him, and then the signals are set again, warning the engineer of the express that he must muLe up fur lost time. To understand this delay and the , sudden changes made in the time j table it will be necessary to go back to the headquarters and to watch the general superintendent and the in train dispatcher. Although many trains running on the line are huti' > * * - ? ii . . : ureus ox inues away, iue exuci pi>M- | tion of every one every second in i the hour is known and recorded. A telegraph operator is woiking in- , dustriously iy the othee ot the train ' dispatcher, receiving and sending (>l orders. The running orders of all the trains are directed from this n | ofdee. Each engineer has orders to ? I make a certain run according to the J" , time table unless other orders Irani <? headquarters interfere. I <,: i If an accident happens on tho ! ; road, the train dispatcher knows it j U; 1 almost as soon as the passengers. A i 1 1-1 _ ?r .. 1 i ! UrtJUifcUUWJl Ul MUiiC 1UUU llUiU UxJ the main line may npsi-t all the cul- ^ culations of the day. Immediately i ? : tlio expresses running on that line ; ^ ! must ho stopped before a collision I $ ' occurs. A snowstorm may blockade j r i a train on the northern branch of $ ! the road, and tliereby make neces- ? ! sary a change in the regular eelied- ? I ule. r A train from the west is ba'f an ? hour behind perliujjs and this inter- # | feres with the regular running of j $ the other trains. Arrangements ? muct be made to let trains pass . < ; without accident. The express trains i nearly always have the right of j ? way. A western express may be be- I $ hind time and start out live minutes ? i i? ... i r.. f J ant-au or Konie special express, in 1 ^ this instance it must give the spe- j ^ cial the right of way, and it is j 2 forced upon some siding. The spe- ? cial express passes without losing a ? minute. ^ There are CO trains oomirtg and ? going, one behind tirao. another ? ahead, probably, and each crowding , out another. The train dispatcher I ? has to regulate this tangle and keep ? things running smoothly. Thus it i 5 is that the engineer of a flier may 1 ? suddenly find himself side tiacted. Should the train dispatcher make a mistake, or fail to make arrangements for two fast moving trains, I the b]oek signal system would probably prtvont an accident. The block towers are connected by telegraph I lines and a bell code enables the men to communicate directly with each other. They can stop a train at any moment by means of their signals, independent of orders from 1 headquarters. Thus the engineer depends entirely upon others to keep the track clear, and he merely runs his train as near schedule time as possible and keeps his iron steed in perfect condition. He Weakened.
