a dark mausoleum, and there the
sleepers lie, never to know the
glories of a coming resurrection
In the presence of this vast destruction,
one is bound to stand in
ail-nee that paralyzes and hushes
the spirit, while memories of othet
days, or rather of nights ol horror,
come over him. He recalls, with
a shudder, the sound oft he enemy's
bugle that burst on him just as he
was about to enter some dale in
. the land of dreams, lie remembers
his desire to llee. and how he

Whither shall 1 flee?'' Shut in on
every hand, he could do nothing
but he prone upon his back to
await the coming of the vender,
whose darts were keen and terrible,
and lull of a neighbor's gore.
A single blast trout the truniphet
of an invader called in a multitude
that were ready to enter with hint
upon his blood-let ting mission.
And here they come, through the
doors and windows and front evenpoint
of the compass, each one

battle raged. It was fierce and fu
rious. Column alter column came
on to the fray, while the attacked
knew, before a single blow hud
been struck, that now, as in evencase,
yielding and defeat were the

hopeless against the hopeful; the
battle of tlie weepc-r against the

come it must, and come it did. and

Hope departed, and the {Treat

question, and drove the spirit into
semi-darkness. Despair sat down
at many a chamber door, and the
smell of burning rap; told of the
battle within. Memories of those
awful hours are like iiighfmates
and visions of torture, and the bare
contemplation of them fills one
with unutterable groans and horrors
of thought.
But the end has come. Ihe
opposing armies gathered in a
night, armies out-numbering the
legions of demons that had made
prey of half a world. There was no
sound of marching nor of gathering
hosts. All was still and a solemn
hushed prevailed; but amid
it all the work of death went on,
and when the morning came, the
enemy of man had disappeared.
Nor did they fly to the rocks and
the caverns in the hills. The aven
ging power showed no mercy.
Corpses strewed the gtound, and
they lie dead, besmeared with an
other's blood. The bugle is broken

brought low. For mouths to come,
a man may enter lite precincts ot
his own domain, nor fear the coming
of the midnight assassin. The
dart and javelin are broken, and

this we all rejoice. We come forth
to our morning tasks bearing nc
marks of our blood that was shed
in the night of conflict. Fresh and
t strong we run our daily race, with
no dread of returning nightly com
bat. Over this we all set up oui
