How the Original Indian liesignalion Survived All Others. The ultimate survival of the original Indian name is of somewhat rare occurrence in the history of Spanish conquest. When Columbus first saw Cuba, about sixteen days after his difficulties had been laid at rest by the sight of Quanaliani, he was conlident that at last he had come to the shore of Asia. Further to ingratiate himself ami Ins designs witli Cjucen Isabella, be named the place Juuna, in honor of her son, FrinceJuan. When, a few years later, the Prince died, Columbus promptly transferred the honor of the name to Ferdinand, the bereaved father, and for a time Cuba was known as Fernaudina. This act of flattery could not have had the desired effect, for the island was next put under the patronage of the greatest of Spanish saints by being called Sant Iago. The next name suggests probable perils of the dee|> from which colonists escaped by pious recognition of the ever watchful care with which the Virgin protects mariners. They named the haven of refuge Ave Maria. Other colonists, noting the irregular, jugged coast lines, called their home La Lengua de Pajaro (sparrow's tongue). Finally tiie use of the old Indian Kaoomn Aclolilielioil ottil t/i.flnv we speak of the island as it has been spoken of by generations thut passed away in happy ignorance of the oppressions tiiat were to crush their race to the ground and blot it from the face of the earth. The original Havana was on the southern shore of Cuba San Cristobal de la Habaua, 60 called in honor of the discoverer. Baracoa first enjoyed the honor of being the cajhtal, then Santiago de Cuba became the chief city, but about the year 1(14:9 the name Havana and the seat of government were transferred to the city on the northern coast, where they still remain. Philip II. gave the city a coat of ariii6 and a liberal local government, and since that time it has easily maintained its supremacy among Cuban towns. CURIOUS FACTS. The dissecting-room of the Military Hospital of Algiers has just witnessed the resuscitation of a solilier who had been supposed to be deal for three days. It was at the very moment when the professor of surgery was about to dissect the supposed corpse that the soldier suddenly awoke from a prolonged lethargy. The three persons who witnessed the scene were struck with such amazement that they were at first unable to do anything. It was not till after they had seen tlie supposed corpse quietly slip oil' the lnarble slab on which he was to have been dissected, and go into an adjoining room to write a few words on a sheet of paper to a?9ure himself that he was really alive and awake, that the doctor and his assistant came to his aid. It is stated that the recovery of the soldier is absolutely complete. Paris correspondence of the London Standard. The Ksijitimau a* Artists. With all his artistic ability the Esquimau is not skilled ill his portrayal of the human form, an.l he is well aware of this deficiency. While he attempts elaborate representations of all other created forms which havo ; come within his ken he attempts nothing but the crudest suggestion of the human figure, usually indicating the lord of creation merely by means of a circular spot, from which a line is suspended, terminatingin two other lines to represent legs, while a couple of lateral lines emanating from either side of the circle suggest arms. Almost any schoolboy can discount his art in this respect. Yet he is by 110 means lacking in imagination, and is capable of portraying the most magnificent and impossible sea serpents that ever the inventive mind of mariner conceived.
