Maj General Joseph Wheeler,
the real hero of Santiago, has determined
to resign from the army
service in order to run for Congress
in Alabama.
The Second South Carolina regiment
is now comfortably quartered
at Camp Cuba Libre, near
Jacksonville, Fla., and the First, it
is thought, will in the next few
days be ordered to Columbia to
be mustered out of service.

ear. the chances for better prices
rre slim indeed. It is true that
new channels of commerce have
recently been opened up, which

consuming the product, but in the
face of such an enormous yield the
2tTect will be scarce'y perceptible.
Whatever argument to the con
frary is advanced there is no rea
enable doubt that the small demand
for cotton is due to over
production. Repeated attempts
it organized effort to cut down
acreage have lesulted in failure,
?o that the only chance we see is
fjreach farmer, without talking
about it, to reduce his cotton crop,
and raise an abundance of provisions.
We know of several who,
lave tried this plan, and in every
nstance it has proved a success.
While not much money is made,
he farmer can at least keep out
>f debt. The day of planting
mormonscrops anil working them
m credit is past, and the sooner
>ur farmers realize it, the better
hey will succeed in their business.
