' / 4 . . THE GRAVES DO NOT LIE. V x Peculiar Circumstances That Occurred in Wilmington. Ashville Citizen. Editors Messenger: In reply to your suggestion in the Sunday's issue of our paper that the %<vencrable Seiiex" >uouId prepare an article describing a re markable circninstance that oe-j -furred in the then town (t V/il-i in nut on manv years air<?, in 1S*>*>. w I it' I remember correctly, in regard to the glorious "3S." as they were called, or- rat her a> they sivleu themselves, 1 \vill say: "If. was caust ii rjy ine publication in a northern newepaper of a ! letter from Wilmington in which ! * I the writer asserted that in that small town there were 3S hahi- ! tual drunkards, that a short time I previous they had buried one o! J their number on a Sunday alteration, he having died on the pre . vious Saturday; that on their re turn from the funeral they had stopped in a saloon where they drank freely and ordered supper, which they called in derision the 'lasts uppei;' that while in thej midst of their revels, oneo them, cried out, 'Well, i< gone (men tioning the one they had just bur-! ied), who will call upon him next ' Saturday?"kI will,"was the response | from oue of the party, 'ami the! following one', said a third 'and I the next Saturday," replied anoth ; er. 'and 1 the following one,' said a third and fourth. Strange as it may seem, just as they had vol i unte^red, so they died one. two. three, four?and on the days appointed by themselves, dying on' each Saturday in succession, and were buried the ensuing Sunday as the first had been and whose funeral they had first attended in: a hodv. * UI remember as it were yesterday, seeing the third an 1 last one, a day or two before his death sui' fering more agony than any other human being that, ever came unamir nli.-api'olinn llo li -1 1 -i Uvi 111 T \' VOV1 ? (lUWI J* ???'4 ?I store on the west side of South j Front street and had occupie . the iipper part of the house as a d \el j ling. On that last wvek ol his ex-1 istence, I think it was on Wed-1 nesday, I saw hisn rushing down the sidewalk in front of his dwelling wringing his hands and sob bing cbnvulsively, calling upon! God to have mercy upon him and I beseeching everv passerby to save I him and offering all ot his possession for life?life even in penury and want, lite in its most abject form, only life. But it was too late. He had made a covenant with death and the ?rave, and they j claimed him for their own. On Saturday when the ri^in:: sun j broke upon the town it shone up on him sinking in death, and ere ; it reached its zenith he was a corpse. Un feunday the funeral bell again tolled forth as he was borne onward to the grave. That man?sdeath may liavl been caused by sheer fright, but however that may be,, die he did, and at the time appointed by himself, j making the fourth one who thus1 died. uThese remarkable circumstan- j ces, all of them dying according to agreement, caused a great excite-J meat and much feeling, and the columns of the local newspapers were filled with eliminations and recriminations. By a gaeat many - I it was looked upon as a direct re-i relation of the awful Providence j of God. by others it was strongly and bitterly denounced as false] and malignant. Hut there was! one iact which could not be dis | pu'ed, they were all buried in the old churchyard of St. James, and their graves could be seen by sverv passerby--and graves do not lie.?The Stale.
