Ar>3n* O r E-chn^s. So .aio:- iMoL'ijrlo's Interview. Tlie Slate received mo report lr nn Washington of the interview with Senator MeLnnrin. in which l.^v ir.u ?< that i '1 .? J i'resilient MoKinley was the most popular l'resiilent since Andrew ^ .] ackson, and ouiiht to lie re nominated l?y acclamation?or words to this elTeet. Comment was, therefore, withheid ami develop nients awaited. Col. Wilie Jones, who was pres.; ent at the timo. and heard all that passed, now comes forward with an explanation that covers the) ease arul shows that Senator McLaurin was misquoted, There is j nothing unreasonable in ColJ Jones* account of the occurrence, and the criticism everywhere, heaped upon the junior senator from South Carolina, seems to he founded on something that had no existence outside- the imagination ol t lie correspondent who reported it. According to Col. Jones' version, published elsewhere in this! issue, Senator McLaurin was dis cussing the unwisdom of attacking thel'resident's conduct of the war, j thereby obscuring the allimpor-i taut settlement ">f tlie money; question. What the senator said . of Mr. McKinley's conduct of the' war is the sentiment of the country, regardless ol party lines From all sides has come a ch orus of corn. ?fiendation?even from those who most sharply criticised him at the breaking out of hostilities. But it is clear that Senator Me-1 Lutirin did not commit himself to' an endorsement of the President's entire policy, hut reserved judgment on that phased it most objectionable to Democratic belief. Mo doubt, the Democratic party would suffer defeat, it it were led to attack the President's handling ofawarin which he has been so successful. More than that, the party would deserve deleat it ii made any such blunder. l>nt there has been no indication of any such attempt, except in the "Vase ol a tew reckless leaders, who could not, in the nation's supreme hour of sfniiT^le rise above the narrow limits of partisan feeling.1 The ruling sentiment of ihe dem-i ocralic party, however, has amplv vindicated its claim to he the party ot the people. The warwas recognized as a people's war,! ys sticii sustained, and the l'resi i dent lias met cordial approval by his handling of it. All this Col. Jones affirms, and says that there was nothing undemocratic in Senator McLaurin's utterances. As State chairman of the democratic party lor South Carolina, Col. Jones has the right to speak with authority, and what j he says ought to set the issue at rest. The incident has been widely heralded to the effect of injuring! Senator Mc Laurin with his party! in South Carolina, the said party j being always willing to accord credit for a meritorious action and decidedly unwilling to endorse Republican principles under any circumstances whatever. The papers that have published the intprview attrihntod to Senator Mo Laurin.ou<:ht to publish <-ol. Wilie Jones:' explanation ol what happened. Tlus is demanded by the ordinary rules of fairness. Senator McLaurin aj)pears to liave done and said no more than any patriotic man mij;ht have said under similar circumstances. The State. The First Regiment. SENSATION IN GREENVILLE. A Clem-on College Profes-or Arrested but Soon Released. Greenville,-Sept. 10.?A rather sensational hearing, which many persons believe to be an attempt at blackmail, was had before Mas istrate Whitmire yesterday. Prof. W W Yager, of Clemson College, was arrested oil the charge of grand larceny, but the magistrate, after hearing all the evidence, dismissed the case and expressed his confidence in the innocence of Prof Yager, who, his friends say, was made the victim of unscrupulous and dangerous women with whom he had unfortunately come in contact. The affair has caused a good deal of talk, but it is only lair to say that the public seems to sympathize with Prof. Yager without condoning his whole conduct.?The State. y HUDf "??.
