A trip through Williamsburg
county at this season of the year
will prove to anyone that this is
one of the lint'Stct unties in the
State. The crops all look exceedingly
well and nowhere does one
see the cotton crop blighted as it
is in the upper part of the State, j
The writer has recently visited;

of South Carolina, and traversed
the central counties coming on
down to Williamsburg, in the
lower section of the State, and he
"willsay uuhesilatingly that in no
county did he see such excellent
crops as are to t>e lound here.
Our trip through this county included
the routes along from
Kingstree toward Kpps, Fowler,
Dock, Indiantown, around to
Cedar Grove church, Benson,

Hades and Like City. All along
the roads the cotton and corn
crops were the finest we have
seen anywhere, and we remarked
about it to our companion.
The soil of Williamsburg county
is unsurpassed, and if a planter
does not make a good crop here, it
is certainly his own fault. The
natural advantages of this county
are not to be found anywhere else,

small piece ot corn that had been
thrown away. The cleanliness ot
the crops spoke loudly in lavor ot
the energy of the farmers, who
realize the fact that grass and a j

pie are greatly favored by a Di- j
vine Providence.

Reports from Chickamauga say
that the l6t South Carolina Regiment
which has been there for a
(iumber of weeks, is still unequipped,
and has not even arms in their
hands.
Gen. Miles and six thousand
soldiers were in Charleston on
Friday making preparations for
the Santiago expedition.
Considerable losses were caused
by fire in Bennettsville and Mc
Coll on Friday last. Amount covered
by insurance small in comparison
with losses.
Charles P. Barrett, of Spartanburg,
was given his final sentence
for swindling and defrauding the
Government, in the United States
District Court. The sentence was
eighteen months in the penitentiary
and a fine of $2500.
