The altitude of The County Record toward the Luke City; lynching is too well known to admit of any question. All along | in its columns has been urged the necessity of prompt and vigorous measures in apprehending the guilty parties that the fair name ol Lake City might be vindicated from the reproach brought upon it by this deed ot lawless violence. But we believe that the post-office inspectors have acted unwisely in arresting men. of good character and standing upon the confession of Newhara and Lee. Had the whole country been searched over there could not have been found a more precious pair of knaves. To haul up respectable men t>efore the United States Court on the evidence of such men would be bad enough; but to take up these self confessed traitors and incendiaries and pay them for their confession with money and clothes aggravates the enormity of the wrong. Newham's testimony is a tissue of con tradiction and equivocations, and the utter depravity of the man reached the climax when he declared that he felt no remorse of conscience for burning the house even when he looked upon the dead body of the post-master, burned to a crisp. Thin man, with whom none of the accused could have been induced to have aught in common, has been led and clotned and paid money by Inspectors Moye and Bulla to trumD ud a charee against! r c men of good name and repute in Williamsburg county. Who then is safe from the slanderous testimony of such villians as Newham and Lee when they not only go free, but are paid for their lies? What a chance to pay off an old grudge or to gratify a private spite! We are not prepared to say that such matters are illegal, but they are certainly questionable and should not be tolerated by a free and enlightened people. However much we deplore the lynching outrage, two wrongs do not make a right, and Newborn's evidence should have uo weight at all FROM VICTORY TO VICTORY. From Friday until Sunday there was almost continous fighting between the Americans and the Spaniards. For some time it had been known to the Americans that taking Santiago was no small affair, because I il U- i i_ ? t 'r> j i I im: ci*.j wtus siroogiy iurunea witn en- j ( trenchments around which barbed wire had been placed, there being on the inside four parallel lines of j rifle pits. These and other obstacles ' 13 which our men had to encounter,, * 1 teiade the undertaking very perilous < and 0110 which required the utiuosi precaution on the part of the Amer ican officers. At the battle of Siboney the Amer icans were stubbornly opjiosed, bui finally succeeded in driving back th< enemy. The difficulty which oui soldiers had to contend with wai further aggravated by the fact thai Genera's fleet was in a position t< shell our trooj>s as they advanced C'apt. Caproa and Hamilton Fish Jr., and other brave men were killed The American casualties were ovei 400, but there was not more than 11 per cent of that number killed. I is not definitely known how many o: the enemy were killed, but it i: thought that their loses were heavy Step by step our men advanced until they were within three-fourth: of a mile of Santiago. On Sunday morning the greatest obstacle in tin way of getting possessioi of Santiago was removed w hen C'er vent's fleet was destroyed. At abotn 9 o'clock the Spanish Admiral mad* a bold dash, hoping to extricate him self from the trap in which he hat been caught. But at once the American guns were turned on him ant the fight began. In about five hour: the victory was complete, the last ol the Spauish vest-els having been destroyed. This victory was of the great est importance to the United States, because the flleet destroyed was tin best Spain had, being composed of her largest vessels. Cervera and fifteen hundred Spanish soldiers are now in the hands o( Admiral Sampson. Besides, there was a goodly number killed during the fight. Santiago is doomed. In a shorl while the story of her surrender 01 her destruction will be told. Senator B R Tillman delivered a striking speech in the Senate on J una 30, on Hawaiian anexation, in which he called attention to the dancer ot incorporating more people of inferior blood into the citizenship of the United States. He further said that he would vote for annexation, if congress would say in words, what it does say in effect, that the negroes Chinese, Malays, .Tupanese, and other inferior races are incapable of self government and therefore unfit to be citizens ol the United States. Said he,"The races are not equal, and never were. God never made them so, and while I subscribe to the doctorine that among the inalienable rights ol man is the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I A I declare my unalterable faith in the doctrine that the white race is superior to the colored/' HOBSON'S REWARD. The President has recommended that Naval Constructor Hobson receive the thanks of Congress for gallant conduct, and that he be transfprrpd to flip Hop This means that he will be promoted, but to what rank has not yet been decided. This is we'l enough as far as it goes, but a prompt recognition should be made of his heroic conduct in a more tangible way than the thanks of Congsess.
