The South ami the "Fourth."
We propose, says the Mobile Register,
thut the people of the South revive
the celebration of the Fourth of
July. The animosities of the late war
have been buried and ought not any
longer to interfere with our observance
of the anniversary of the natal
day of the republic. We see once
again a united country, the North and
the South joined iu a war against a
foreign foe. Southern men wearing
the uniform of blue aud Southern men
bearinertbe tlas of our republic. Why,
if there were nothing el6e to rejoice
over, this spectacle itself should arouse
enthusiasm. But there is more than
this. This spectacle is the result of
the form of government bequeathed to
us by our ancestors, and that government
itself was the first greut result
of the Declaration of Independence,
which was given to the world on the
Fourth of July, 1776.
Indeed, it is someting worth celebrating,
this anniversary of the beginning
of ft republic in which such a
thing eau be accomplished. We appeal,
therefore, to our people to take advantage
of this fortunate opportunity to
revive an ancient and honorable custom.
Let the Fourth of July be celebrated;
let public exercises take place;
let us have an oration, and a parade of
the civic and military societies, and
wind up the day with a liberal combustion
of gunpowder. It will do us
nil u world of food.

War ami Crimp.
One of the peculiar effects of the
war is the i eduction in the amount of
crime. This is especially noted in the
larger cities. In New York the change
is so marked as to excite comment on
the part of the police authorities.
There has been a reduction of nearly
fifty per cent, in the number of crimes
reported in that city bince the opening

A Naval Hero's Story.
From the Times-Ihra'd. Chicago, III.
Late in 1SGI, when President Lincoln issued
a call for volunteers, L.J. Clark, of
War re u, Trumbull C Ohio, was among
the llrst to respond. He joined the mortar
fleet of Admiral Porter just before the memorable
operations on the Mississippi Liver
began. It wa? at the terrific bombardment
of the Vieksburg forts, that the hero of this
story fell with a shattered arm from a
charge of sehrapnel.
After painful months in the hospital, he
recovered sufficiently to be sent to his Home
at Warren, Ohio. Another call for troops
fired his patriotic zeal and Clark sooo enlisted
in Company II. of the 7tu Ohio Volunteers.
In the army of the Potomac, j,e

A Fortune From a Scare.
An inventive genius who suffered
from attacks l?v stray dogs when riding
his wheel, set his wits to work to devise
something which would be au efficacious,
and yet comparatively harmless,
means of defense. As a result he has
brought out and patented a pocket
pistol which will shoot ammonia,
water or other liquid. The most vicious
dog cannot withstand a few drops
of ammonia in iiis mouth or eyes, and
vet there is n<> danger of actually in
juring a valuable annual wmcu migii; j
playfully iiiiiioy a rider. The weapon
has proved so muck-of a success as a
means of defense as well as fun-making,
that the lucky inventor isrealizing
