The Saluda Sentinel came to us
last week in the shape of an illustrated
anniversary number. The
whole edirion was very creditable
yy' : to the town and county of Saluda
One of the laws passed by the
last session of the Legislature was
the separate coach bill. The act
has been "hanging fire5' in the
General Assembly for years and
*. years, but was passed by the over
whelming majority of one at the
recent session. Now that the law
has passed we hope that it will
work well. As it provides that no
discrimination shall be made in
the way of accommodations for the
noes therewill be no reason for
complaint on the part of the colored
people.

now being sent from United
States to the starving Cubans be
sent in merchant vessels instead
of war ships and this request was

the refusal of the United States to
vecall Consul Lee. it was expected
that Spain would have given
him his passports at once, thereby
forceing trouble, but Spain did
nothing of the sort. ?

like all probability of war is over,
so it is hard to tell what will oc$'

the only light we have.
There are two or three things
that we wish to write about, and
the fir>t is the low price of cotton.
The speculators say over production
is the cause of five-cents cotton,
and it is the same old story
every year. Now, Mr. Editor, if
you will go to the depot and see
how many bales was shipped from
that point during 1896, and then
see the number shipped last year,
I'il bet there were more bales
shipped in 1896 than in 1897. The
cotton crop is exaggerated every
year, which is delremental to the
planters. I say let the cotton be
counted at the gin and not by the
speculators. We will never get a
true statement of the production
as long as it is counted as it is at
present.
The next thing I want to speak
is this: The February term of
court js just over, and Scott Mention
is boarding at the u Brit ton
House" at a costs of $9 per month,
the tax-payers footing the bill.
Why don't our law-makers make
a law to put such boarders in the
chaingang and ihake them pay
tor their food till the next instiing
term of court, when if found guil
ty they can be put back on the
chhingang.
The next and last thing that I
care to write about now is the
fact that the county supervisor
does not keep the roads in as good
conditiod as he might, nor has he
ever put tip mile posts filong the
roads, and sighn-boards at every
cross roads and fork, as required
by law, which if done would be
a great convenience to the travel
