In nnr local columns this week re print the final report of the rrand jury filed Inst Thursday, j fliere is not much in #he report I hat calls for especial mention, but! here is at least one thing out of he report, that should be spoken >f. i On Monday night of last week,? luring tlee aitling of the grand! urv, "the right arm of the law," hereoccureed in this county,'a ew miles from the court house, ? -I II 1- I I me oi me uioouiesi, umi^csi, ?o%t heinous crimes that Ins ever >een committed in a Christian and, and the grand jury seems to lave not been cognizant of the act. Had there been at least a nention of the crime in the report I would have shown that the ;rand jury, as a body, did not enlorse the acts of tlie cowardlv ass- j ssins that murdered the postmas-j er and his liitle innocent babe at ! ^.ike City, but there is no mention f the fact that any crime had een committed. It does not ook well for the grand jury, lironoh which all "true bil!s"h ive o come, to overlook such a Indents crime as wos committed. It :oes out to the world that the nen to whom the whole nation ooks lor protection, upon whom iven the courts have to wait, have aken no notice of the affair whatever. We do not beileve that the :rand jury intentionally omitted to nentiou the deeit of fiends. It vas simply an oversight, but one hat. cannot be forgiven. The tody is composed of good tuen?' nen who will not condone such! ids of cruelty and horror. There ' s not a member of the grand jury j rho does not want to see the law j indicated in th^m itler, hut there | ras not one who thought of niak-! rig mention of the crime in their j inal presentation. Since our editorial on the neglect of the prand jury to call at tention to to assassination of F B Baker was written, we have been handed the following by prominent citizen of Kingstree: Editor, County Record:? "The mountain ha s 1 a bored and produced a mouse." One of the most appalling crimes in the history of South Carolina has been committed within the borders of Williamsburg couutv during the sitting of the grand jury. The newspapers of the State and of the world are filled with descriptions of the horror; the Governor ol the Stale, recog nizing the actr?city of the crime, has quintupled the usual offer of reward; the United States government nearly doubles the offer of our vjovernor, >ri um ^liiuu jjij, in Is final presentment, contents itself wilh expressing the opinion that our worthy supervisor will shorly published the few accounts audited at the Januarv meeting of the board of cou niy commissioners! Not one mention is made of the dastardly affair, in any way, vet every member of that body was doubtless aware, from published reports and current rumors, of what had occurred. The grand jury is sworn to in vestigate all matters pertaining to the <:ood of the community, and all crimes and violtions of the law; -iml it is the opition of the writer that it is the duty of the solicitor to advise them in all matters which should properly conies be tore them. How nas that duly been discharged by either? It strikes us that it would have been not alone the privilege, but the duty of that body, with the assistance of such counsel as they might select, to repair to the scene of the horror, and either in a body or by a com mittee started an investigation. While this might have ha ! no sat istactorv results, it would have demonstrated to the world that we are frowning down upon crime, ? i . a _ ..? i ana are aeieruuneu ?<> ai u-usi mdeavorto bring cowardly assassins injustice. If you will be so kind as to allow me a little sptiee in your columns, I would like to write h few words concerning the recent horrible murder of postmaster Haker and his little daughter at Lake City. While there can be no doubt that the act of mob violence was committed bv white people, f can say with impunity that there is not a citizen in this community ttflm countenances or condones in any way I he heinous deed, or who does not wish to cee justice meted out ro the perpetrators. While there been several meet ings of the white people at different parts of the State expressing their condemnation of the afTair, and no such meeting has been held here, still 1 au sure that I voice the sentiments of every white gentleman in thecommunity when I say that the act of the white iiends at Lake City is deplored, and that it can only wreak mischief on the perpetrators and on the white people of the State at large. Concerning the meeting of indignation said to have been held by the colored people of this com munity, 1 know nothing, and I do not believe that any proini nent or respectable coioreu men had anything to do with it.
