William IL Kilcrbe, of Marion

than a year ago he was inaugurated
governor of South Caioliua, having
been cho6en for that positiou by a
practically unanimous vote of the
Democracy of the state. Since the inauguration
of Wade Hampton,uo one
has entered the executive with gran
der opportunities to benent boutti
Carolina and to build himself up in
tl?e estimation of her citizens. His
inaugural address, which it is char-,
gtd he did uot write, or which, at
least, was revised for him by abler
men, was a magnificeut paper and
gained tbe plaudits o} men and papers
without regard to faction, lie
started out well, but has fallen by
the wayside. Despite his occupancy
of the gubernatorial chair, he today
has a smaller following than almost
any other public man in South Carolina,
barriug l)ona;dson and Whitman.
lie has lost most of bis old
friends, aud the devotion of many of
his new friends is to be. doubted. It
is safe to assert that at least niue onj'
of ten of those who supported him ti
the last ditch in 1804 are today hik
bitterest enemies, while most of those
who are conspicuonsly standing by
him either supported John Gafy
Evan8 in 1894 or else are Conservatives.
Why are these things thus? The
