POLICE AND NEGROES.
Desperate Fight In Which Negro -JSfl
Toughs and Officers Take Part.
A white child walling along the
streets in Charleston wa. poshed into Vro|
, the gutter by a crowd of negro toughs.
| Half a dozen white men, most of whom
: were street car conductors off for 'din- J
<v*
: ner, ran up to take the boy's part, when
1 they were attacked by the negroes. A J?
terrific hand-to-hana fight followed.
clubs, stones and iron rods being usea 'tfl
ss weapons. Conductor Myer was
knocked senseless with an iron bar.
The negroes were getting the best of
the fight when the police came in sight
and then they fled. Eight of the negroes
took refuge in a shanty. A squad of - ?|
policemen tried to make an entrance^
but the negroes opened the windows
and began shooting. The officers re- k
! turned the fire, ana for a few minutes
' a regular battle was in progress. Henry
Perry, colored, was shot through the
head and killed. Edward Washington, *; Ng
another negro, was seriously injured
and is not expected to live. Policeman
Burton, who led the attacking foroee,
ia dancflrnnslv wounded.
Fire colored rioters were arrested after
be;ng clubbed. The situation waa /JB
alarming for a while, but the polica ^
have control and averyting is quiet
XXGBOES HI CITED. '
j The negroes of the city are worked Jaj
up to a piteh of great excitement by - . .1
the killing of Henry Perry by Policeman
Barton. A mass meeting was held *
in Mithaw Rifle hall and speeches were
made condemning the act of Policeman vH
Burton, and it is said a boycott fl
will be entered into against the a|
street railway company. Resolutions :J9
were adopted asking the State govern- "5B
ment to take a hand in the matter and . \
see that they are protected from policemen's
bullets. Negro men went to the
different lawyers in the city asking
' advice and begging them to "take the
case against Officer Barton. His wife.
! it is learned, will bring a civil action J
for damages against the officer.
SUMTER'S LICENSE TAX.
Passes Council After Hard Fight.?A
Test in Court.
A special to the State from Sumter
um that after a long fight and a great
deal of filibustering the city council of '
Sumter has passed a license ordinanoe .
and the same will go into effect on Oct.
1, and shortly thereafter the test of the
law will be made in the courts by those
who have joined forces to fight the
ordinance. The firm of Haynsworth &
Haynsworth have been retained by the
anti-license people and will carry the
case into court* while the city will be .
repiesented by City Attorney T. B.
Fraser.
The anti-license people thinh they
have a good case and are supported by
a strong public opinion, it being the ?
general belief that the income to be derived
from the license tax is nnnecessa- - .'ft
ry and will beget extravagance in mu- ' M
nicipal expenditures.
Be the merits of the case what they
may, the outlook for a very interesting
legal fight is on and will be watchea
with great interest by everybody, ' i
: whether directly involved or not
