Gazette contained a ref port of the trial of Edga Purvis, who killed Mr. M J Blackwell some Weeks ago. As Mr. Blackwell had many relatives and friends in this .contkfy we reproduce the article from the Gazette. > -At 7.80 o'clock this morning the * . Jury in the trial of Edgar Purvis,' r for the killing of M J Blackwell, tbS Atlantic Coast Line flagman, on the qight of August 15, brought in a verdict of murder in the first de gree, without any reeomniendationsr The trial of this cafce com* menced yesferday morning in the Superior Court of Harnett county ; at Lillington, before Judge (>. H. ; v, Allen. Solicitor Pou and Mr GM Rose were the attorneys l ?r the prosecution, and Mr. \Y E Murchison and Mr. Clifford appeared for the defendant by the appointment ?Anrt. the nrisoner having engaged no counsel. By 11 o'clock I the Jury *w?8 chosen and both sides announced their satisfaction with the twelve men. The prosecution's evidence was almost identical with that already publlshed in the Observer, with several new aftd damaging witnesses. Of the latter, two men, Ed t'romartie and Jim W right confined ifc prison here with Purvis, testified to statements made to them by in which he confessed the I shootiug. a number of the crew of W; the train on which the murder wasl committed testified that they rec-l agnized Purvis as being the man vtho had the altercation with the iltgman by his voice. They swore I *" that they had heard him speak sevtfapes since his arrest. ..^Tbe fatal bullet was produced by Dr. China and proved to be of the same calibre as those used in l^irvis' pistol, producen by deputy && - ahwif AIIpl I T I- *?d Loms'x, the eye-witness of t he fepmier was the star witness for <he prosecution, and described tin> Shooting and flight of himself nod Purvis in detail. The State introduced testimony to show that Purvis had ample time to meditate on the killing and that it was virtually ail assassination. Of the great number of witnesses the State introduced the defence was not able toehike the testimony of the most evidence was convincing and conclusive. The defence put no witnesses on the stand, and the defendant did not testifiy on his own behalf. 'The speeches by the attorneys on both sides were brief, but aide, * but could hardly have had much effeetoneway or the other on the! t juty, (which is said to have been a very intelllgeut one,) as the evidence was everwhelminglv against the prisoner. The Judge's charge was mainly taken up with explaining the difference between murder in the first drgree, murder in the | second degree and manslaughter, L and what would constitute each, it wasaboutsundown when he finish-1 - ed and the Jury retirad. "When the verdict was announc ?ed by the foreman the morning t the prisoner showed little emotion v and seemed prepared for the severe ^ genalty. The crime for which Purvis is | , now under sentence of death wasl the coldblooded anu unprovoked! killing of Mr. M J Black well, of! Fdjwtoo, 8 C, a flagman on* the Atlantic Coast Line railroad, on-the niorpingof August 15 near Dunn, ffr-'ln Harnett county. The flight and capture are of too recent occu rrence & to need recital of the details." 1r: Seaview, Va.,?We have a splendid sale on Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, and our customers, coin-! log from far and near, s(>eak of it in highest terms.
