The proportionate use of letters in the printing of a newspaper is as follows: e 1,000, t 770; a 728, i 704, s 6S0, o G72, n 070, l? 540, r 528, d 392, 1 300, u 290, c 2S0, m 272, f 230, w 190, v 184, p and g 168, b 158, v J20, k 83, j 55, q CO, x 46, z 22. The intricacies of the law, indeed ! Douglass White, of Montgomery, Ala., killed a woman ? some five years ago. For that crime through n istrials, reversals, and soon, he Iras enjoyed six trials. At the first he was sentenced to I death, at the second to life impris-j onment.at the next to fifty years imprisonment, at the next to ten years and now he has been acquitted altogether. Singular enough, . also, the man is a negro. One of the best representatives of the negro race, as well as one c.f the most sensible, delivered an address in Washington, I). (J., recently, in which he gave som? sound advice to the negroes. Amongst other things he said: uTbe best friend of the Southern negro is the Southern white Democrat. I assert that neirro labor in the South is better paid, better treated and better fed than labor of the same grade in the North. I am firm in the conviction that !*be salvation of the colored race lies in making strong friends of those white Democratic neighbors I and employers." This is good - sense. This man is of the Booker Washington type, who has realized that the only salvation of the negio lies-in his disposition to be guided by the whith men amongst whom he lives, and by grace he must sur vive, if survive he does, Charleston will hold her annual fall festival tins year. The lesti val will last a week as usual, the opening day being Oct. 25, It is proposed to make the festival one of the most success!ul and attractive that has ever been given. Low rates will be obtained from ihe railroad and every possible inducement made to carry visitors .to the city. The amusements which will be provided promise to be numerous and varied, insuriug to all who attend the festivities a r weeK ol pleasure. lire l*aJa p" Week Association ha? already pot-1 ten to work and arrangements for the festival are now under way. Such substantial indica tions that the parents of South Carolina appreciate the value of t . an education for their children is j exceedingly gratifying. No doubt; a great deal of seW'-denial has been Bp practiced in order that some of those children might secure an ed ncation. But it is self-denial in a good cause'and we have no idea;' that those parents who have prac-'t Eg: . ticed it will ever regret having . done so. We hope that this lively | interest iu educational matters will continue to grow. It is a good omen. It inspires hope in the full tvue of South Carolina. , 1 ' _ . lias any increase in dru likeness or immorality been observed since the "original |iacknirev stores were opened in the Stale? asks tne Ureenvilfe Wows.
