During his campaign speech at Chester last Wednesday, .Senatorial candidate S. G. Mayfield charg j ed Hon. John L. McLanrin with having tried to form a Populist party in this State, and said he could prove it. Mr. McLabrin said that it was not so, and he could prove there was no truth in the assertion. Mayfield said that 1 if McLaurin could prove it was not true then he (Mayfield)would withdraw from the race for Sen alor; but if he could prove that hlcLaurin had tried to form such a political party in South Carolina then McLaurin should withdraw. The following day, at Yorkville, Mayfield made an unusallv B' olomtent, sneech and brought it to ! ! a'close in a very dramatic war by saying that he had Misrepresented McLaurin, and that, according to his promise, he would withdraw from the race for Senator. which he thereupon did. it seems that Mavfieldhad taken Congressman Strait's word for it 4hatSenator McLaurin had tried to organize a Populist party in j this State, but, after he had made j the assertion on the stump, McLaorin had proved to him he had > * not only not attempted any such | thing, hot that he was mainly in sininients! in defeating a scheme to. organize a third party, and ;v May field thereupon announced Ibis intention of withdrawing. * -If Mayfield really withdrew from the race because he had made false charges against Mr. McLaurin, and because he had done him a great injustice, then he has done v; a manly act, and one which will ^loake bira honored among men. But, or the other hand, it he was oolylathe race to advertise him self forth* purpose ot running for -Governor next year, or in 1900, a* has been charged by some, and was only looking for an opportunity to withdraw from the contest, Shen he should be, and will; be, despised among honorable mea tor his hypocrisy. If he nfcliy made false charges against \ Senator McLaurin, and did so | f upon fhe word of another,! without any proof save the word j of that one, then he acted very 1 unwisely and has been taught a j very severe lesson. lie must j "V have had implicit confidence in' the word of Congressman Strait, j or, be knew that he could not; prove his charge, and so made his j* . volunteer promise to quit il he could not prove it, knowing full ?/>)! that, hp u.*nnM h;ivp tn nnif ~ T. Any way one looks at it, it does not look' well for Mr. May field: Ho either made his charge against McLaurin upon the mere state-1 ment of another, without any! proof of his own, or, he made it so as to hate an opportunity to quit the race, knowing that the: charge could not be sustained.; Which was it? . < . The origin of South Carolina's soubriquet, *kthe I'almetto State," is thus explained: uOn June 28, 1776, a force of less than 10(J Carolinians, under command of Co). Moultrie, protected by the fortification on Sullivan's Island in Charleston harbor, made of the trunks of the Palmetto, repulsed the attack of a British fleet under command of Sir Peter Parker, and when the State of South Carolina was organized, the State seal which was first used in May, 1777, was made to commemorate this victor}'.
