The following letter from Secretary
of Statu James G. Blaine in 1890 it
snppcscd to have had groat rrcight with
the wuys aud means oommi'tee:
WAPnisoros, April 10, 1KP0.
Dear Mr. McKisi.ey?It is a great mistake
to take hides from the free li,t, whore tlmj
have l*>en for so many year*. It is a slap in
the f.K-o to the South Am? rieans, with whom
we aro trying to enlarge our'ratio. It will
benefit the farmer by adding 5 to 8 per cent to
the price of his children's shoes It will yield
a profit to the butcher only, the last man thai
needs it. The movement is injudicious from
beginning to end, in every form and phase.
Pray stop it before if sees light. Stieh movements
as this for protection wiii protect the
Republican j>arty i"to u tqwUy retirement.
Yours hastily, Jakes o. Bi.aink.
Eon. William McKinley, Chairman Ways and
Means.
Whore is the Blaino this year whe
cau head off the westerners who want
their 6hare of protection and foolishly
imagine that they cau get it by a duty
on hides? It is perfcctly.consisrent with
the protection system to tax hides, especially
us the balk of the tax would
probably go to a few monopoly butchers
and ranchmen. But observe some of
the c-Tects upon our industries:
Tho importations of untaxed hides
end skius last year wore valued at ?20,210,528.
The goatskins were valued at
$10,803,359. The former were mostly
converted iuto sole leather, beltings
and such like heavy material, for which
cur native hides arc not thick enough.
The goat- kins are not produced in this
country.
From this raw material wo not only
manufacture boots, shoes and leathei
goods for cur cwu people cheaper aud
better than tlicy are made elsewhere iu
the wcrld, but we exported finished
products cf the value ci 100.
Without free and cheap raw materia]
this export trade would have been impossible,
and our own people, as Mr.
Blaine pointed out, would bo compelled
to p3y mere for their footwear. The
wages paid to our workers in leather
last year amounted to $25.542,166.

MOTHER'S FRIEND
is the remedy which relieves
women of the great pain and suffering
incident to maternity; this
hour which is dreaded as woman's
severest trial is not only made
painless, but all the danger is removed
by its use. Those who use
this remedy are no longer despondent
or gloomy; nervousness
nausea and other distressing conditions
are avoided, the system is
made ready for the coming event,
and the serious accidents so common
to the critical hour arc
obviated by the use of Mother's
Friend. It is a blessing to woman.
