The picnic at Johnsonville iast Saturday was very largely attended and much enjoyed. The crowd t was estimated at S00 or 000 people. Several speeches were made and there was every thing to eat ob lainable. The annual picnic's at Johnsonville are always, looked forward to with a great deal of an ticipation by people from all over the coun?y. and a large gathering is always expected. Mr. Herbert A. R"v. W. P. Holland, of Rhems, exchanged pulpets with Rev. W. D. Moorer last Sunday ar.d was to have preached in the Baptist , chinch here Sunday morning and night, but was taken suddenly seriously ill while delivering his morning sermon, and was unable to fulfil his evening engagement Mr. Holland recovered sufficiently to return to his home Monday, but was even then lar from well. His many friends throughout this county hope for his speedy and permanant recovery. The county chain gang was organized last Monday with six con victs . Four oi these were sent from the circuit court and two from the Magistrate court 'one from Magistrate Gaskins, of Lake City, and the other from Magisstrate McCants, of Trio. The gang has been sent to work on a bridge across Lake swamp, about one mile above Lake City, Mr. J. 8. Howie has been selected as guard and lias charge of the squad. Supervisor Chandler has requsetus to state for the benefit of the Magistrates that they may send their convicts direct to the chain gang nnd not to the court house, as it will only be double trouble to send them here. Bradham, of Clarendon, that he will in all probability enter the race for congress. D. D. Evans, of Marlboro, J. M. Johnson, of Marion, T. M. Gilland, of Williamsburg, McLaurin, of Marlboro, and others are spoken of here tonight. There i* no noubt that there will be lots of "material" to choose from, and the race lor congress will no doubt be a hot one. There is no better man in the sixth dis inet than he, and a no more able representative could possibly be selected. Several young ladies and gentlemen came over on their bicycles : from Lake City lest Sunday after| noon and attended services in the I Baptist church here. Henry S. Baggett, eldest sow of ! Rev. J. J. Baggett, of this town, died very suddenly of a congestive chill at his home in Georgetown on the 17th inst. He was about thirty-one years old and leaves a wife and two small children. 'Rev. J. P. Coleman, who has been attending school at KPacksville, S. C., has returned home. Married, on the evening of the 22nd inst., at the house of the bride's parents, by the Rev. J. J. Mr. Win slow Wrist's new residence on Main street is receiving the finishing touches of the painter's brush. It is now one of the most attractive buildings in town. Dr. Byrd has lately built two more tobacco barns, making six in all on his tobacco farm. The Dr. will have a large quanlty of the "golden weed" to "cure" this fall. Mr. W, J. Willoughby made the first shipment of beans from this point this season last week. Several of the artesian wells in town have about ceased to flow. We think they need boring out again. Miss Ilattie Sanders, who is visiting her sister, Mrs. Whitehead, will return to Florence next Satur ! day. We are very sorry she is going I to leave us. j The Scran ton and Lake City Telepeone comyany has been formally organized and it wont be long before our sister towns will be connected by telephone lines. This is a good step. A knitting factory is being talked of and the probability is that it will be built in the course of another year. We have the capital and enterprise and we can do it. All we are lacking is the organization and this want can be easily supplied. Let our citizens come together and talk about the matter, swap ideas and feel pulses.
