Some pessimist says: "G od lieutenants don't always make cood captains."' Promotion is so slow. But good people can always get good job printing at reasonable prices at the County Record office. Here is a little incident illtislra five of Southern thrift which our farmers' Institutes may discuss with profit. While the official announcement has rut i yet been made, nevertheless I i have just gotten the information J direct. Governor Kllerbe will ; certainlv name J<?hn L. McLanrin : % as senator from South Carolina to ' morrow, Wednesday, May 26lh.! Mr. McLaurin has been in Coluni- i bia for a day or two, and lire con elusion was reached by the governor late last night. Nothing has been told the regular repor'ers about the governor's decision but the information that I have ga'h-i ered comes from a personal friend , - t La o nil onnirrnce ! Ol UIMI1 lllcpMC.Ilui aiivt luii^n. - . man McLanrin. Mr. McLaurin is aware of the 'act that in le>s than a week he will lea United States senator, and. he is peacefully sleeping at the home of a friend here in Colunihi l. The question now is who will be McLaurin's successor? I have juv:t been told by a close person al friend of sheriff D. J. Bradham, of Clarendon, that he will in all probability enter the race for congress. D. D. Evans, of Marlboro, J. M. Johnson, of Marion, T. M. Gilland, of Williamsburg, McLaurin, of Marlboro, and others are spoken of here tonight. There i* no noubt that there will be lots of "material" to choose from, and the race lor congress will no doubt be a hot one. Anions tho<e spoken of to succeed McLaurin, our choice very natur.dly is Mr. Gilland. There is no better man in the sixth dis inet than he, and a no more able representative could possibly be selected. It Mr. Gilland can be induced to enter tIre race4 he will no doubt make it interesting for the other candidates, even should he not secure the position. B.v all means let Mr. Gilland come out. Proper name should be plainly written, as we cannot be expected to know how all the names of men and women, ugly boys and sweet girls are spelled. We may guess, but we cannot make the boys uglier or 'he girls sweeter by any system of guessing which we can invent. Quinine and other fever medicines take from 5 to 10 days to cure fever. Marrying a Man to Reform Him. The most subtle and deceitful hope which ever existed, and one which wrecks the happiness of many a young girl's life, writes evangelist Dwight L. Moody in the Ladies' Home Journal, is the common delusion that a woman can best reform a man by marrying him. It is a mystery to me how people can be so blinded to.the hundreds of cases in every community v.here lotrering homes have fallen and innocent lives have been wrecked because soTe young girl has persisted in marrying a scoundrel in the hope of saving him. I have never known such a union, and I have seen hundreds of them, result jn anything but sadness and disaster. Let no young girl think that she may be able to accomplish what" a loving mother or sympathetic sisters have been unable to do. Miss Maud Logan, of Kingstree, spent last Sunday in the city, stopping at the Valley House. Her fa her R. C. Logan, affectionately called "Lum Logan."of the Kingstree County Record, is a "prince of g,ood fellows" among the journalistic fraternity of the State. Mr. Win slow Wrist's new residence on Main street is receiving the finishing touches of the painter's brush. It is now one of the most attractive buildings in town. Dr. Byrd has lately built two more tobacco barns, making six in all on his tobacco farm. The Dr. will have a large quanlty of the "golden weed" to "cure" this fall. Mr. W, J. Willoughby made the first shipment of beans from this point this season last week. Several of the artesian wells in town have about ceased to flow. We think they need boring out again. Miss Ilattie Sanders, who is visiting her sister, Mrs. Whitehead, will return to Florence next Satur ! day. We are very sorry she is going I to leave us. j The Scran ton and Lake City Telepeone comyany has been formally organized and it wont be long before our sister towns will be connected by telephone lines. This is a good step. A knitting factory is being talked of and the probability is that it will be built in the course of another year. We have the capital and enterprise and we can do it. All we are lacking is the organization and this want can be easily supplied. Let our citizens come together and talk about the matter, swap ideas and feel pulses. Then understanding each other l>etter. organize and start the ball in motion. C* ? Quinine and other fe* ver medicines take from 5 to 10 days to cure fever.
