The gin house of Capt. John S.
Bowman with four bales of cotton
and all the seed from bis crop were
destroycit by lire on the morning of
the 18th instant. A match in the
cotton caused the fire.

A called meeting of the Orangeburg
Court House Democratic Club was
bold in tbe Engino Hall on Tuesday
evening last, Vice-President A. S.
Hydrick in Ibo chair. After reading
tbe minutes of tbe last meeting, tbe
President instructed tbe Secretary to
read a letter of Mr. B. Frank Slater
resigning tbo Presidency of tbo club.
On motion tbo resignation of Mr.
Slater was accepted and Dr. A. S.
Hydrick, elected by ballot to fill the
vacancy. Col. J. C. Edwards was
elected by acclamation to fill the po
sition of First Vice-President made
vacant by the promotion of Dr. Hyd
rick to tbe Presidency. By voto of
the club it was ordered that the Exe
cutive Committee increase its number
if necessary, to five members and to
appoint such additional members to I

tion of the audience and the frequent
applause which greeted tbe happy
points of the speakers bore unmista
kcable evidence of the enthusiasm
which existed. Thcro is no longer, if
it ever existed, a trace of apathy or
luke-warmness in the Court House
Democracy ; and tbo party's majority
at this precinct will be a harty well
done to their faith and zeul in the
cause of good Government in Orange
burg County. Tbe club will meet a
iiain on next Tuesday evening at
which time a large attendance is ask
ed.

with the Greenville News in the fol
lowing paragraph: "If shooting a
man is ever justifiable?as we believe,
it is?the attempt to shoot Day at'
Hunt8ville will certainly meet with
goneral approval. A man who nsea

connected with his enemy, deserves to
die. We hope the South will never
become 'civilized' to the extent of

A few weeks ago Mr. J. Baxter
left his home at eight o'clock in tho
morning to attend Binnakcr's Carap

afternoon of the name day his bouse
